Remote start on manual?????
Has anyone here installed a remote start alarm on a manual transmission vehicle? I know most shops wouldn't even consider it, but is it possible?
Thanks, J.T.

I'm assuming you just have to wire it so it fools the car into thinking the clutch switch is activated. From there it's just a solenoid that activates the starter. It's actually illegal to install on manual transmission car, from the people that I asked at audio places. It probably varies from state to state though. I don't really ever leave it in gear when it's parked unless it's on a steep incline or decline. Just make sure you park with the e-brake and never leave it in gear and it'll be fine.

I have the viper 550ESP and remote start on my 5 speed. It was fun for the first month but when I think about it, It's really pointless. I just start it whenever people are checking out my car or when there's chicks around.

CompuStar has dedicated mode from manual remote start.
Dennis,
I don't agree with your statement. Remote start warms up my car every morning while I am inside the house making coffee. On crazy hot Texas day, I can get in a cool cabin. It's not pointless for me.

The only "legal" way to do it, is get an alarm that works on a manual car. There are ones that do. I have a Viper 550ESP sitting in a box from my auto, that no shop will install in the 6 speed for me with the remote start active cause it's not designed for it. Shops can make it work, but for safety reasons most will not do it. The ones that make the provisions for remote start have a safety switch that will only remote start the car if the stick is in N. If the car is in gear like most of us leave a manual car. It doesn't work. Remote start is great if you need to cool down, or heat up the car.

do a search on ebay or call the number at www.compustar.org for authorized dealer (they would charge you an arm and a leg for it (approx. 700) but it has lifetime warranty).

SilverKnight...True.
It all depends on the circumstances. I live in Hawaii so the cold isn't a problem. And In the afternoon, when I get off work, I work in a secure area where no frequency transmissions can go in or out so I can't even use it 'till I get out the building.
The remots start just bypasses the clutch.

If you get it from an authorized dealer, they would put it in for you (the alarm price includes labor already).
If you got it from another source, call car stereo shop in your area. I did the install myself so I cannot help you locate a shop.

The difference between doing remote start on a manual and a stick legally is that the alarm must have a neutral wire to do it legally on a manual. Usually companies reserve that feature for the top of the line alarm, but there are a few exceptions. Clifford made the Solaris which had a programable wire for neutral making it legal, but companies were still afraid to do it. Also, get your alarm from the company you want to install it so that they can warranty it no problem, and make sure you trust the installer. Alarms are 90% install, and a poor install could mean a lot of problems. I would stay away from Compustar personally, we've pulled out quite a few lately because they failed and customers didn't want the place they had them origionally installed at touch their vehicle again.

well, if customers dont want the original installers to touch their vehicles again, then the problem seems to be with the installer. I had a 2001 model failed on me too. I thought it was my luck but anyway, its feature was really nice. I missed it. I have a 99 version in my car now and havent had problem (crossing my finger).
