Radio/Cigarette lighter Circuit

hey guys,

I have a 1997 2.2 cl.

I have been going crazy trying to figure this problem out..

The 7.5amp fuse under the hood for the Radio keeps blowing out...
I thought it was the bad cigarette lighter so, i disconnected it and it still blows it...

Right now, every single thing is disconnected.
Radio, clock, cigarette lighter, hazard lights.

It still blows a fuse!!! I did do a visual inspection of the wire harness connectors and check for broken wires...I found nothing.

It only blows the 7.5 amp fuse under the hood. It does not blow the one by the hood latch.

The climate control system is still connected.

Now the thing is, when i put a new fuse in, it does not blow out immidiately. It takes a while. Sometimes long time or sometimes short time. I dont know!

Please help me out! Any service bulletins out there regarding this issue???

Thank You
MC

Do you have an aftermarket radio? I believe the radio and cig lighter share the same ground behind the console, they're on the same circuit

Hey blackack do you hear of cigarette lighters crappin out often on 1st gens?

Mine comes out of the base... I'll have to take a picture tomorrow, but it's really irritating, I have to hold it in just the right spot for it to actually hold a charge when my gps is connected.

I need to know where the ground is for that circuit. it would be cool if you could scan the pages of the radio/cigarette lighter harness.

Iv been without radio for months now, and I really want to get it fixed..lol
Thanks buddy!

Nope, not a common thing, however megaman the ground on the back of the cig lighter itself is a flimsy piece of metal, and I've actually snapped one before, I would check there first, then the wires from that trail into a wiring harness. As for how the ligthers are held in, I've never swapped one before, just swapped the entire console piece

Mine does exactly what Gnate's does. The lighter works if I hold it in the right place, but I can pull the whole unit out of the base. Any suggestions?

I guess I should take the entire console apart and try to secure it in there somehow using a high adhesive tape or somthin.

From my experience, I tried to remove it and it was a pain I gave up, so a clip or something's def broke, take the console out and go at it from the back. Also if it isn't working CHECK THE WIRES ON THE BACK OF IT, they're REALLY flimsy

I know this thread has been dead a long time, but I'm have the exact same problem. My cigarette lighter hasn't worked since I bought the car, now with a 9 hr drive every once in a while I need the cigarette lighter. I've taken the center console apart and tested the harness with no luck. There's no power going to the assembly. Now what?

Can I piggyback on the radio circuit (adding a fuse to make sure I don't blow up the radio)? Any other ideas?

Thanks!

Shawn
