Pioneer double din install question

I'm almost finished installing a Pioneer AVH-P2400BT into my 2000 acura TL (non navigation). I purchased the metra double din dash kit, model 95-7868B, to mount the new HU into my dash. Everything went smoothly, including steering wheel adapter (axxess aswc) and keeping my sub (following instructions found on acurazine). The only problem I'm having is that the trim piece that came with the metra dash kit doesn't fit. It appears as if the opening on the trim piece is smaller than the outer-outer face (the one that's a few mm behind the face if you look at the HU from the side) of the pioneer. It took me 2 hours to install everything and I've been scratching my head an additional 3 hours just trying to install the trim piece. Has anyone experienced anything like this? I don't think it's user error. Any chance I got a defective trim piece?

Could be a universal trim piece, anything you could do to trim it? Or does it look ok without it?

Yeah it looks horrible (IMO) without the trim piece. I shaved the back of the universal trim piece which helps but it's still not as flush as I'd like. It's kinda like a TV with a dead pixel, once you know it's there you'll focus on it. My wife thinks it looks fine but I'm inclined to keep working on it. I'm sure I'll wind up breaking the trim piece since it's so thin.

I actually got the Metra kit. I contacted crutchfield today and they told me their kit only has 3 piece (no trim piece). Anyone have pictures of their kit installed?
