Only one set of keys

I have a 2001 TL, 94K miles, and I bought it a year and a half ago with only one key. I know want another. I know that theres a chip inside, so I cant just get a random key cut, that it wont start by car I get that part. But if I were to get a key cut the same way as the one I have now for a buck or so, will that key work in the drivers door to unlock the car, even if it wont work in the ignition to start the car? I would love to have an extra key incase something happened like locked the keys in the car. Thanks!

I did the same thing. Go to Home Depot and they can cut a key for you for like $2. It opens the driver and passenger side doors so its good enough if you get locked out. It can't start the ignition of course and it also can't open the glove box for some weird reason.
