Newbie question about Navi?
Newbie question about Navi?
Hey, great forum!
Not being familiar with Navi I was wondering if someone could tell me if Voice Recognition allows you to simply speak the address and the Navi can understand the numbers and street? If so, what do you do if it gets the address wrong? What if you have two people who use the car, can it voice recognize either one? Thanks, from my search it seems most people who get the Navi really like it. Joe

You can use voice commands up to a certain point. For basic address entry, you can tell it to get to the point of entry, then you have to use the on-screen keyboard. A little more voice usage in this area would be nice, but overall its pretty good.
When using POI (points of interest), you can do much more without having to type. (eg: say "Places", "restaurant", etc..)
And yes, it can recognize two different voices without having to "re-train" it.
A great option if you want to pay the extra $.

What about the keyboard, can you use it while driving, or is its accident-from-distraction potential too great? If you have to use the keyboard at some point in order to enter a destination, what good is the voice command feature?? Just wondering, I really don't know much yet how this works. I promise to toddle down to a dealer this week to see it in person.

I try to only input numerous characters (city/street name/house #) while stopped or in light traffic. It would have been nice if you could speak the numbers though. (I don't see why not. It recognizes you saying numbers in the personal address area.)
Other than that, the voice commands make other stuff easier. (at the least you can control other areas without taking your eyes off the road)

I'm pretty sure that it doesn't recognize city or street names because there is no good rule on how to pronounce those words. The Navigation system does allow you to enter state names, and telephone numbers (pick location by POI phone number).
You can program several addresses before you start (or when you are comfortable to add them) and add them to Today's Destination.
Voice control is good for changing the map display, climate control, radio, etc. without removing you hands and attention from the wheel/road. (And it's cool, too!).
I also have the Honda Navigation System in my 2000 Odyssey, which is similar DVD-based, but smaller touch screen and no voice recognition. I definitely prefer the TSX navigation -- and yes, I like it. (Navigation was my primary requirement for the TSX, I was willing to consider several colors, interiors, and even MT vs AT, but would not have bought without the Nav System.)

i am an insurance agent, so Navigation was a requirement. ( i already had it in my 2001 TL) i use it daily to find addresses of houses i need to inspect before i write insurance on them.
the voice commands make it easy to program and if your a pick and peck typest as i am programming the street name and address doesnt take long. each time you type in a letter the database already knows all possible combinations of street names available. so it begins to make letters on the keyboard gray or unavailable. it leaves only the letters you will use to spell the street name and therefore makes the remaining letters easier to find while driving,
