I don't think anything bigger will fit. And I already got the box from my old subs

What were your old subs? My guess is you could actually get louder with 10s and a better box...

what are quad 8's? and they were some cheap kenwoods running on an 1100w crunch amp. im pretty sure they blew because i had them bridged. any specific speaker tho? weather its 10s or 12s i was looking at jbl or kicker comps.

Quad means 4. He had 4 8" subs.

Subs don't blow because you bridge them. Did you ever read the bcae1 links I posted to you months ago?

You were over powering kenwoods and probally clipping them crap out of them when you were trying to get loud is why they did not last.
you may have been even making the amp trying to work to hard if you don't know how to hook up subs so the impedence is correct.

#1
If you are going to buy cheap subs do not go beyond rms ratings.
#2
Don't get crazy with the amps gain.
#3
Make sure you have the correct power for whatever your amp draw is. Or that can lead to toasted audio too.

Best way to pick your subs is by air space you have to work with.
RMS rating
Quaility is up to you.
IMO Quaility does not come from a 100 dollar sub.
So be prepared to crack the wallet if you do not want junk.

Let's talk budget.

What are you setting aside for subs, and a proper built box?

i think i would go with the type R's rated to handle 350 each which is better suited to my amp i think. just in my price range and if it came down to it i could build my own box. just read the DIY on it

Don't get hyped up by rms ratings.

The gto's are more efficient than the r's. 87 vs 83

these 4 old school jl w0's would be a good buy

Vintage JL Audio Sub 10w0 Old School Power! | eBay

4 of them in 4 cubic feet sealed with 800-900 watts should get loud and sound clean

Check the specs on the website, they actually don't require super massive boxes. Like 1.5 cubes ea/ sealed would do it.

Ported, double that. Still, not shabby and they are great SQ subs (and you know they're gonna get loud.) GREAT price.

im kinda worried if i should trust ebay? i guess i can always return em! i think im just gonna go for it! do 2 seperate ported boxes custom each side of my trunk. and like fourthmeal suggested to me a long time ago i took the stalk sub out and created a port straight into the cabin. it sounds way better thanks again fourthmeal and eggyhustles!

Just build the box very strong, very accurate, and you should be happy. I would fire the subs backwards (and the ports), or go sealed backwards. And yes, with the stock sub removed.

Those specs Eggy posted above, that's what you follow.

BTW these particular eBay specials are factory refurbished MMATS subs. I'd trust that.

Lastly, keep in mind these are SQ subs first and SPL subs second. They are made to not be multi-kilowatt subs to burp one frequency. They are made to be musical, punchy, and very LOW reaching subs. In fact, the 15" has an Fs of only 20hz free-air. That's pretty good.

so i bought the 12s got everything all hooked up and i wasnt really with the output. i didnt want to push it to hard with the gain so i kept it around 4 or 5 vrms. i first wired them according to this diagram from crutchfield...

http://a248.e.akamai.net/pix.crutchf...4-ohm_mono.jpg

but i think less impedance would increase the output right? basically i have to other wiring diagrams

http://a248.e.akamai.net/pix.crutchf...2-ohm_mono.jpg

idk if that one applies to my setup.

http://mobile.jlaudio.com/support_pages.php?page_id=160

the 4 speakers wired in parallel. i think this would have the best output.. let me know your opinion before i go out of my way to rewire. thanks

did u get all 4?

Those are sq subs first, spl subs second.

wire them like this and report back

What size box do u have them in?

They need 1 cube each sealed

Ported is 1.5 each

How much output were u looking for?

With all that cone area and power, they should get loud. You won't be breaking records, though.

If anything, go ported and tune low.

that definitely helped.im bumping pretty loud now but the sound quality is still really good. ive been spending the last week or so trying to tune by ear but id like to use an o-scope and find the exact clipping point. thanks though that really helped. i think before i get new boxes id like to make some sort of amp rack and throw a vocal amp in with new speakers and tweets.

JL will also break in after a bit and sound more robust. Also make sure none of your boxes are leaking.

Pics still to come i have em but just need to take some time to put them up. So any ideas on how to get a box that somehow fits in my trunk? as i measures theres not really enough room to have them all going straight across. I've been thinking about firing them upward, but i heard that's hard on the speakers. either that or have them facing diagonally towards the back of my trunk, 2 on each side, but i don't want cancelation. any other ideas?
