Need help with stereo upgrade.

Guys

I bought my 06 TSX (Non nav) a few weeks ago. So far so good, but I want to upgrade the stereo. I went to a local shop and got a couple of ideas for systems. Here is what I have so far:

6.5 JL component set for the fronts TR650CSI
6x9 JL pair for the rear TR690TXI
10 inch JL sub with box W1V24

Boston GT40 4-channel amp driving the front speakers and sub
Boston GT20 2-channel driving the rear speakers

Im keeping the factory head unit

What do you think?

BTW, the guy is trying to sell me a LOC (JL clean sweep). I havent showed him the post by El-D yet. But, would an LOC benefit me with the setup I have above? Its like $350 which is a nice chunk of change I can put towards another use. PLUS the volume control for the LOC wont work with the factory head unit or the volume control on the steering wheel.

Legion.

You don’t need a LOC or a clean sweep but if you are going to drive aftermarket amps with the TSX factory HU, but you can’t use the Boston amps.

I did a bunch of posts on this already so I’ll just cover the basics here.

First the factory HU DOES NOT have normal line outputs. Normal line outputs are unbalanced just like most aftermarket amps. An unbalanced signal uses one wire to send the audio and another as the return.

The TSX HU uses a balanced line, two wires transmit the audio and the cable has a separate shield. You can not feed a balanced (TSX HU) signal in to an amp with an unbalanced line input. Doing so will ground (short out) on for the balanced pairs of each channel. This will cause lots of problems.

The good news is that amp manufactures are coming around and equipping their amps with differential inputs, so far I found the JLs and the Rockford Punch and Power series. If an amp has differential inputs it will say so, just check the specs. Look for the words True and Full Differential inputs. Stay away from Quasi and ground isolated inputs.

Other amps have diff inputs you just have to find them.

Don’t let the shop hack your wiring.

So what youre saying is (for an 06 TSX)

1. I can get away without using a "clean sweep" or other LOC provided that I choose the correct amp. (and I get to keep using my OEM volume controls)

2. If I want to use the Boston amps Im going to need a LOC.

Sorry to be dumb, but I want to make sure I get what youre saying since Ive read a lot of conflicting things on this forum about clean sweeps. Thanks.

1. Yes

2. No. If you want to use the Boston amp, you can do it, and you will still not require the LOC, but you may end up with some undesirable side effects, such as turn-on pops or static in the lines.

1) Yes, if you use an amp with true or full differential inputs you can remove the factory amp/eq and drive the new amp from the HU balanced outputs. You will retain full control from the factory HU. You will also retain all the noise rejection and ground loop isolation built in to the factory HU. You also need to use the correct cable (normal car audio interconnects are designed for unbalanced audio) and follow my instructions about the correct way to bypass the factory amp.

I can’t stress enough that the TSX HU is incompatible with regular car audio amps. Only amps with Differential inputs will work.

2) A LOC is designed to take a speaker output from an amp and pad it down to a useable line level. You would need a LOC if you were planning on keeping the factory amp and its internal EQ to drive you aftermarket amp. The TSX HU output is different from speaker outputs and will not interface correctly with a LOC.

For the best sound possible use the recommended amp type and cable specs.

My adapter takes care of the interface for you; you just pick the correct type of amp. (oh the cheap shameless plug).
