You're better off going with an Alpine amp and a matching JL Sub. Trust me you'll love it.

I can tell your a audio newb.

1- you said alpine amp and matching jl sub(p.s. those don't match)
2- If you we're in the know you would know that there is way way better stuff than those brands, or hell you could have read the entire thread and realized this.
3- If your wanting to learn more just ask bro, many of us on here can help you out.
4-It's all good we all start somewhere

Compared to what? I would take 95% of the products mentioned in this thread over anything those 2 companies produces...

i'm happy with my alpine equipment, although i'm sure there is better stuff out there. PDX amps fit nicely under my seats, Type X components sound good to me, Type X sub hits pretty damn hard and the Alpine 9887 Headunit has great I-pod control.

You have a 9887 and you're commenting on the Ipod control?!?! Wow... Please tell me you're running active with that thing? Otherwise, you wasted a decent chunk of money to step up from the 9886 to the 9887...

just because an opinion differs from yours does not make them wrong, not everyone has as extensive a knowledge into various brands as we do

It depends on how it's set up now. You could notice a huge increase in SQ, but if you're not set up for it, you could notice a decrease in SQ. You also need more channels of amplification to run active. If you know the basics of it, you might as well try it. If nothing else, you'll end up going back to passive, which you already know.

I don't know why you guys are acting like alpine and jl are shabby brands

they're overpriced, BUT they are good products.

You can't tell me the w7 isn't a nice sub.

Thanks again everyone for your help. I ordered my 12" SSA ICON last night and the 1000 watt Sundown amp they suggested with it. I'll let you all know what I think of it in about a week or so.

That is a fantastic choice, I think you'll be quite pleased. The owner of Sundown really stands behind his amps too.

There's a reason Jacob (along with all of the competitors that run his amps) stand behind Sundown products. I have an SA-8 and 1500D and absolutely love both of them.

there a huge diffrenace actuly i ran both of them :P

as for ppl sayin you need a line out converter you really dont . the factory radio harness is just like an rca out to an amp. so if your willing to go find that wire then you wont need it really. unless u want a little tuning option from ur loc device..

within a tsx, you dont need a LOC, just splice into the line from the front and rear speaker and turn them to RCA. I did mines at the harness location where it connects to the stock amp. And I read somewhere that they even have a harness for those lines that you can buy instead of splicing into factory wiring.

If you're planing to add an aftermarket HU then stick with above method. If you plan to stick with stock HU, then find an amp that has Differential-balance input ( JL slash/HD has them, others are out there .. I read RF has it) or you might have to add in a Balun something (mercman knows it, do a search for "Balun")

Currently running :
Pioneer AVH-7500DVD with P900R
Alpine SPX-137R for fronts , I'm not running any rear speaker
Alpine PDX-F6 amp (150 x 2 for fronts, 300x1 for sub)
JL 10w3v3-4 in JL's recomended enclosure based on volume

With above setup, I love it. It's loud inside with more than enough bass for me. I like mines clear and loud but not too much to where it'll obnoxiously annoy people.

From my experience of reading mattastick and eggyhustle, these guys are very knowledgeable .. but they favor SPL. As for me, I'm more into SQ minimalisticly for finance reasons.

Not sure what's realy your goal is beside enough to impress your friends. But I highly research like Feuss2 recomends.

Mattastick and eggy is right .. there are other brands out there that are better but to an extent. But with subs, you can make any sub bump because it's all in the box. You also don't need gobs of power to get what you're trying to attain.

With my prior setup : same HU and front speaker as above, but with a JL 300/4 powering the whole car and a single 12" MTX cheapy sub retails for like 100 bucks. which online (ebay etc.) will probably be like 50 to 60. It still bump damn well for the set up. I had many times people thinking i'm running more equipment than I actually am. with the JL300/4 puts 75w x2 to front and 150w to sub.

So goodluck with your quest for sound.

Like you said, it's all in the box. Unfortunately, OP has a very small sealed box. This is not good for getting loud. If he were to rebuild the box, yes, he could get decently loud with what he has. Unfortunately, he's not going to do that. So, to overcome the box, he needs more power. There are 3 "ways" to get louder: 1. More efficient box (out of the question here), 2. Cone area (more/larger subs, again out of the question), 3. More power (only viable option).

As for me being SPL oriented, I guess you could say that. Compared to what most people think is loud, yeah, my car could be considered an SPL build. To me and other audio competitors, though, it's actually pretty quiet. 142+ db really isn't that loud when compared to 160-180+db of true SPL cars, especially considering that 2 10s and 1 amp can net a 156+ (DB Drag Street A, more so if the car had more battery, higher voltage, etc for a different class) in the right car and enclosure. To me, that is SPL.

Oh, and my daily car does 132.2db. Single Sundown SA-8 powered by an MBQ 4125. Really seems like an SPL build

I don't have a sealed box, in fact I don't have any box yet... but I plan on building a ported box to SSA's specs. I never had any plans to use a sealed box, I always wanted a ported box.

SSA's warehouse was a little behind so I didn't get the sub until about a week ago, and got it installed today. All I can say is WOW. The SSA 12" ICON rocks. Thanks eggy and matt for introducing me to SSA, I got the 12" ICON and the Sundown Audio SAZ-1000D for about the same price I was going to get the JL W6 and a JL 600/1 amp....but this thing would beat the pants off a W6. Thanks again guys, absolutely love the sub...but the neighbors don't
