Navi DVD Error

Around two years ago I installed the OEM navi system to my 03 Non navi cl. It was working great until today.
When I turned my car on, the navigation system started loading but then this came up:

DVD Disc Reading Error
(Unformatted)
Please Consult your Dealer.

I went to the diagnostic menu and all the test said Ok, I reset everything but I still got the same error.

So have anybody got the same error? Any suggestions

By the way; before somebody asks, no, the windows logo did not come up at anytime.

Thanks in advance.

I recall reading some threads where people's DVD readers went bad. They sent them to Alpine and Alpine refurbished them for something like $150. Sure beat the 3-4 grand Acura wants for a new unit. You may have the same problem. You might want to search on this. One post I recall had a phone number for Alpine.

Hey Rocket_man

Thanks for the information.
I got the Alpine phone number and the address.
I have not cleaned it yet but I will buy a DVD cleaner tomorrow and see if it works.

Thanks again.

Update

Just to give you an update about this error.
I cleaned it using two different types of dvd cleaning kits and the problem is still there.

I went to the local Acura and they told me that it could be the navigation disc went bad (scratch) or the dvd reader is bad.
So my next step is to find another navigation disc and try it to see if it is the disc or the dvd reader what is bad.

By the way; I already contacted Alpine and they said that I can send them the navi dvd reader to re-conditioner. Also the parts manager from the local Acura also told me that they could sent it to Alpine electronics to get it fixed.

I will keep you post.

Update 2

I could not find any body around here to borrow the navi dvd disc, well actually, I found one, two weeks ago, I am still waiting. So I just sent the dvd reader to Alpine electronics through the local Acura, because when I talked with the Alpine people, they said it will take up to three weeks to fix it and when I talked with the local Acura, he said it may be back in one and half week, so let's see what is going to happen.

What did you do in order to know that it is not the DVD unit, did you try it with another system?

What I have read so far and according to the service department person of the local Acura, it is either the dvd unit or the DVD disc (when you get the same unformatted error).

I cleaned my DVD unit several times (using a DVD cleaner kit) and checked all the connections before I sent it to Alpine, that is all I can tell you.

Now, I am waiting for Alpine people to tell me if the DVD unit is OK or if it needs to be fixed.

Please let us know if you find the problem.

Thanks.

After 2 1/2 weeks, I received the Navi DVD unit from Acura (they sent it to Alpine). So the guy from Acura told me that Alpine people could not duplicate the problem or error , So I started thinking that I may need another DVD disc. When I got home I installed the unit again so I could use the A/C controls, nevertheless; I inserted the DVD disc waiting for the error but everything started working again , may be it will show the error later. I used the car all day and everything was normal. I turned car on and off a bunch of time but everything ok, so I call Alpine to ask if they cleaned it or dropped or kicked it, well the Lady told me that they just reset it and then ran a bunch of diagnostic test. Now, I did unplugged the unit like for 20 minutes but I always got the same error. The way she explained it did not sound like reset by unplugging the unit but I am not sure, may be it needed to be unplugged for more than 20 minutes or it is just a temporary fixed, I hope not.
The system has been working ok for the last two days (knocking on wood).
The good thing was that I did not have to pay for S&H or for checking the unit.

I use to get these error messages in my 01 CL and most times it was either really cold or really hot for the first time in awhile.. I always ejected the disc put it back in or even reset everything with the battery..

If it happens again, I will do all, specially, disconnecting the battery for longer period of time (more than 20 minutes).

I get this problem 4/5 started an it's been going on for over 2/3 year...Here how I been solving this problem.

1. When you 1st start your engine on your TL/CL
2. Wait until you see the Acura Navi screen Logo pop up hit your A/C button
3. Next hit [Map] then wait for [OK] to pop up and press it after that hit [A/C]
4. Now when you are on A/C screen wait until you see Setup turn Black (right bottom corner next to clock)
After all this your Navi should be running fine again an now it ok to use your Navi. You must do this in exact order.
This all should take about 10-15 second.

So it's.....
After you see Acura GPS logo Hit
[A/C]-[Map]-[OK]-[A/C] wait setup turn black an your done.

Some time you have to do it more then 1 time to get it working an Yes you have to complete turn off car to restarted Navi Unit.
I now always do this every time I think I need the Navi for something.
