Nav system lost with H/U replacement??

I have a 2000 TL with nav system and I want to replace the Bose head unit because as you know, it won't play most CD-R's. The Crutchfield site says if I replace the H/U the nav system will be lost?! I can see the nav system VOICE being lost (which I don't care about) but the entire nav system?? Can anyone here verify this?? I've searched and searched here to no avail.

And BTW, Jonesi's sticky above directs to generic automotive news not anything TL or audio related.

Nav will still be there, but the nav voice will be lost unless you modify it to work. The DIY is somehwhere on here.

I'm just planning on replacing the head unit to get better CD performance, get USB, and more volume. I love the navi system and want to keep it.

03 TL-S, I lose voice only?? I can live with that. Nice avatar BTW, or is that your self-portrait???!

I can do the install, I'm just double-checking on the (bad) info provided by Crutchfield. It didn't make sense to me, which is why I'm asking on here. I found all the other info here to make the upgrade.
