Muddy sound from a port

I have been reading about boxes and I wanna get a ported box now. But on crutchfield it noted that I will get a muddy sounds from the ports and what the hell is a muddy sound? I have a single 12 solobaric and only pushing 500 watts RMS and since I listen to alot of music wit low bass notes, a ported should do me good. Who all is using a ported box and what kind of results are you getting.

ported often aplifies some frequencies but doesn't produce others at all.. so some beats will rock the block but others you won't hear at all.. I like sealed better .. that makes .04
