I personally would not get an IDMAX with only 500watts. WIth that amount of power I would probably look into the regular IDQ subs, Infinity Perfects, Kicker L5 or L7, Rockford Fosgate HX2, or JL W3.

It all depends on what you listen too? What sounds good to us may sound like crap to you. You may wanna go to local audio shops and listen to the different brands.

i had a rockford dvc 12'' and that worked nice. then i had two 10''s in a ported box.

now i have no subs

i dont wanna dump money into a new amp to power a w7. 380watts hits hard enough for me.

anyone know what speakers would sound good running without a box (free-air)?

i listen to a lot of different music.. hip-hop, alternative, and trance.

Guys ya'll aren't listening to him . He only has 500W, so w7's and IDMAX's wouldn't sound all that good...and would be a pretty big waste. What JaySyn77 is exactly what I would say...except that RF subs are way too boomy and low SQ for me...and Kicker is usually just plain crap (I have a long explanation for this). I totally agree with all the other choices he listed though.

thanks austin519

i got a chanse to listen to some subs the other day, and it looks very probable that i will be going with a pair of xtant's in 10'' size with a box. they sound better than the alpine type-s IMO and are a better value than the JL W0.

The old fosgate amps were rated different than the new ones. I had a 100.2 that was 100Watts X 2, the new 100.2 only has 25 Watts X 2.

The 500a2 would be 1000 X 1 ...or 500 X 2...

I seriously don't think this is correct. I believe the original 500a2 was 125x2 and 500x1 at 4 ohms. You may be thinking of the really old amps named without the "a2" after the numbers. the old waffle grill amps. I am actually looking at my year 2000 Car Audio and Electronics Directory and it seems that I am correct. The rated power for the 250a2 was 62.5x2 and 250x1 at 4 ohms...

It has been a loooong time since Rockford had an amp rated at 500wx2...

Yes I now that. That is why I said the "rated" power. It makes more sense to state rated power since not all 250a2's will put out 380w and some will put out a little more.

Sounds good.

autophile1:
Good call I didn't even see what amp he had...a 250a2 is only 250W man...not 500W.

Woodsdaddy:
The old amps were actually xxxax not xxx.x like 250a2 (old) -> 250.2 (new). And nothing was changed about the naming convention. Take two examples...250a2 and 600a4.

250a2/250.2:
125Wx2 @ 2 ohms
62.5Wx2 @ 4 ohms
250Wx1 @ 4 ohms

600a4/600.4:
150Wx4 @ 2 ohms
75Wx4 @ 4 ohms
300Wx2 @ 4 ohms

hornyleprechaun:
Nope...that's not right.

Which Xtants? The X or A series? What type of enclosure? A shop recommended a single X104 in a slotted box, with the A6001 amp. The X series's hexagonal shape/increased cone surface sounds like a good concept. Looks nice too.

subwoofers

The Rockford Fosgate 250a2 is 250 watts into a 4 ohm load bridged. When you split that into 2 subs, at 4 ohms that's only 125 watts to each sub. I know Rockford Fosgate doesnt recomend it, but I have a bridged 2 ohm load on my 800a4, which is rated for 400 watts into 4 ohms. In theory it should double it's power output into2 ohms, giving me 800 watts. So, if you give the amp a 2 ohm load you may have close to the 500 watts. By the way the amp gets vey hot, and will need cooling fans. I personally have Soundstream exact 12's which are incredible subs. I would recomend, Soundstream Exact 10's, Image dynamics IDQ 10's, JL Audio 10w3's, or Diamond Audio M5 10". However I am into sound quality, and if you want somthing that hammers really hard, there may be better subs out there, although I can tell you my 12's will go over 140db.

here was the situation.

Rockford 250a2

rated on the paper @ 362 watts X 1 channel at 4ohm load.

i have two xtant 10's that handle 250rms and 500 peak in a sealed box with only one positive and negative inlet.

so does that mean that i was making 724watts peak?

yes, the amp did get hot.

the amp is currently getting repaired, and should be back at the end of the week.

That's not right...if I'm understanding you correctly. At 2 ohms...it's only 125W into each sub. At 4 it would be half that.

"I know Rockford Fosgate doesnt recomend it, but I have a bridged 2 ohm load on my 800a4, which is rated for 400 watts into 4 ohms."

Hmmm...so you have an 800a4 bridged 4->2 and you're doing what...driving both channels in parallel to something? Because if you're running each of those channels at 2 ohms...that's not good for the amp, it will burn out early and it is unstable. Even with cooling fans...it will still be unstable and burn out early because it wasn't designed for that.

"In theory it should double it's power output into2 ohms, giving me 800 watts."

This is what I don't understand. Are you just using one of the two bridged channels on the 800a4 or what? And in theory no it won't give you double the power. At lower output impedances...especially half of what the fet circuits were designed for...it drops off exponentially...so you'd be looking at more around 700 or so.

"So, if you give the amp a 2 ohm load you may have close to the 500 watts. By the way the amp gets vey hot, and will need cooling fans."

Again I strongly suggest against this. I'll be running my 800a2's at 3 ohms with a, to put it one way, large cooling system. 2 ohms will end up hurting your amps, just a warning
