JL Audio W7 alternatives?
I know most people on this forum swear by JL Audio, especially the W7 series speakers, but I would like to know what alternatives there are to W7s? Alternatives that'll give me similar bass, sound quality, and quality in general for a similar price. I just want to add some bass to the stock system for now and may be upgrading the stock speakers sometime in the future, but the only plan for now is adding some bottom end. After all the reading I've done on here I had decided to go with a 10W7 and a JL 500.1, but am now wondering what other similar options are out there. I'd like a little setup that's reliable and that won't need to be replaced due to blowing the sub or amp, so I'm second thinking the 10W7 because of the foam surround now. Can any one please give me other sub/amp configurations that'll be similar to the 10W7/500.1 setup. Thanks!

yea Eclipse right on. The Titanium series are beasts but the Aluminums are badass too. Those are the only subs ive found to compare in SQ and SPL to the w7. JL's amps tend to be a bit pricey but theyre good amps.

Thanks for the replies. I did a little more research on the subs mentioned and think that the best alternative to the W7 for me will be an IDMAX, especially since it's probably cheaper. I'm going to check if any reputable installers down here stock Image Dynamics (I know they carry JL) and try to compare the two; plus, I rather buy the entire system and have it installed at the same place in order to hopefully work a better overall price and just in case of any warranty work down the line.
Crazy Sellout, why do you say the W7 sounds better to you? Is it tighter bass or more bass or what? Also what amp are you pushing your IDMAX with and what was the W7 you heard using?
That actually brings me to another question, what amp would be recommended for the IDMAX? I thought maybe sticking with the JL 500.1, but after doing some reading on SoundDomain.com I kept seeing it mentioned that a subsonic filter wasn't really necessary with a sealed enclosure, and that if later required I could use an inline filter, so I'm debating a JBL 600. Knowing this board, I'm expecting to get replies stating something along the lines of, "why would I pair a really good sub like an IDMAX or W7 with a JLB amp," but I still haven't been given any substantial evidence to justify spending the extra money on a JL amp or some other more expensive amp. I mean, is the difference that dramatic, and in what way? Or is this extra expense for a small difference that only an audiophile into competition may notice? I'd really like to know before putting down the extra cash since I don't want to waste any extra money if it really isn't necessary and I've heard that the JBL 600 and 1200 are great amps for the money.

I had a IDMAX hooked to the same JL amp. It sounded real good but they can handel a lot more power than the 500w from the JL amp (its probably closer to 600) You dont need a subsonic filter for a sealed box so it a not that important to you if you are going to seal the box. I would look at the JL1000/1 to push that bad boy and let it rock or go with the 1200.1 or whatever it is from JL. I would want to keep the amps matching (just me) so if you have a JL amp for highs then get a JL amp for the subs....so it looks prudy

NOLACLS, I had thought about the JBL 1200 also, but it seems that the IDMAX will work fine with 600 watts and will probably give me more than enough bass for the stock system, and probably for any interior speaker upgrades done in the future. I don't want to have 1200 watts for bass that'll completely drown out the rest of the speakers, but we'll see.
RaptorCLS, I've previously heard mixed reviews on the Solobarics. It appears that they're great for hip-hop with lots of bass, but not as good (clear) for rock music, which I do listen to a lot.

The w7 just sounds cleaner to me, doesnt sound as rough when its hitting. Hard to explain, sorry.
Im using an Arc Audio 1500dr amp for my idmax.
I heard Nickys 10w7 which had an JL amp, but dont remember which model.
And i have heard Spriohs, he has 2 10"w7.. i forget which amp he has since he changes more than i shower.

how do you guys feel about the JL W3 line? i just bought 2 to fit into an old box i had and i was wondering what is the appropiate RMS to run these at? i heard JL audio specs undercut what the speaker can really do.

Rod I think it sounds fine on 600w...thats how I had it....but if I were to do it again I would have put more power to it. Not that I need it that loud all the time...but some times I like to jam it :buthead:
Dets I had 2 10w3s in a sealed box before running on a RF 800.2 Way more power then what JL says but it was loud!! You dont need that much for them but it made them hit.
