Ipod mini-stereo vs. dock output fidelity

I'm looking at buying an Ipod. For research purposes, I visited an Apple store to check 'em out. When comparing the sound output (via JBL speakers), the fidelity sounded much better when using the "line out" out of the dock vs. the head phone jack.

Can an after market Line Driver connected to the headphone jack compensate or is it best to utilize the dock output?

Does anyone use the dock in their car over the headphone output?

Is the SNR of the pre-amp much better when sourced thru the bottom of the IPOD. Or is it just the line driver in the docking station?

It could produce better sound than the CD player!!
