the picture of an ipod with a sad face with a !, and a link to www.apple/IPOD/support.com

?

had that happen to me a few weeks ago, it's said to be a bad hard drive or battery needs a replacement. first try resetting the ipod
(hold menu and pause for 15 secs)
if that doesn't fix it, schedule a appt. with your local apple store for them to look at it, but i believe they try the same thing. if that doesn't work they bring it to the back to reset the battery. if all that fails, they'll offer to give you a 10% discount (worthless) in exchange for the broken ipod, or you can send it to apple to fix for 160$ (might as well get a new one).

i personally had who is an engineer for apple so he fixed it for me by replacing the hard drive with a new one for 20$

There are lots and lots of companies that will fix them for cheaper and even upgrade them.
