ipod control through SNHOND3 (comments/suggestions)

Ok, I know the ice-link is out, but we are looking at a ~$200 price tag, and I already put ~$100 into the snhond3, my question is since there is a cd changer input on it would it be possible to use those connections to control an ipod through its remote. In case you dont know about the ipod, has an inline remote with a play/pause, track forward, track back and volume control. I am wondering if you could map the changer inputs to the remote allowing the head unit to control it. Also would a regular voltmeter be enough to check to see pin configuration (i.e. push a button on the head unit and check the voltage on the pin on the snhond3). Comments and suggestions would be great, especially if it is even feasible

i just talked to the soundgate tech today about a similar idea and if i understood them correctly it can be done but to develop such a product would be cost prohibitive.

If you check out the FAQ you'll see it's MSRP $149 for what you want to do with the IceLink.

Important
We put a temporary hold on 03/04 TSX, TL kits to verify some compatibility concerns
You can place your order, however expect delays until mid December!

That probably doesn't apply to the Sony cable for the SNHOND3, right? Isn't that for a complete setup that interfaces with the head unit?

So, let's compare the two:

SNHOND3 and Ice-Link common features/disadvantages:
• Connects iPod sound output to CD-C input of factory head unit (HU)
• iPod volume is controlled by HU
• Playlist/Artist/Album management is controlled by iPod
• MP3 track info does not display on HU

SNHOND3 advantages:
• Cost: $99
SNHOND3 disadvantages:
• Track/FF/REW must be controlled by iPod or iPod remote
• Play/Paus must be controlled by iPod or iPod remote

Ice-Link advantages:
• Track/FF/REW can be controlled by HU/steering wheel.
• Automatic Play/Pause when iPod is/is not the source*
* Question: does iPod automatically play/pause when HU is powered on/off?

Ice-Link disadvantages:
• Cost: $149-$199 (??)

So, you've got to ask yourself whether an extra $50-$100 (an extra $149-$199 if you already own the SNHOND3!) is worth being able to FF/REW/PLAY/PAUSE on the HU, considering that neither option will ever be as robust as the full iPod UI.

Since I've already bought and installed the SNHOND3, I'll probably stick with it. I use the iPod remote with no problems. The iPod and Belkin 12v adapter live in the bottom of the armrest, and the remote is zip-tied to the handbrake lever where it's very easy to operate.

The only gripe I have is that when you shut off the car, the iPod doesn't pause/sleep automatically, but I bet Apple could fix that in a new version of iPod software.

Yeah, I decided I didn't want to do it for that reason. Plus, I'd only want a nice install (like how mine is with the RCA jacks in the console as in my sig), but yet I wouldn't want to put something so proprietary into the car for whoever buys the car from me eventually. I still don't use the remote, but I might consider it, hmm...I just don't want it out in the way like that

I guess I will check it out and see if I can find anything out on my own.

If anyone wants to buy my snhond3, I will pick up a icelink, but then which one do I get (2nd gen for my ipod now, or 3rd Gen for my future ipod that I am sure I will buy in the future), more complications

My SNHOND3 should arrive within few days, if I know the ice-link are coming, I will never order the SNHOND3.
