iPod in '03 TL?

Has anyone found a good way to connect an iPod to the stock stereo in a 2003 TL? (6 disc in dash CD changer & no Navi) So far, all I am seeing is the FM broadcasting kind and the reviews on those are mostly bad. I am not going to do it if I can't do it right.

I do all of my own stereo installs and replacements so I can handle the tech side but I don't want to go digging around until i know what I am looking for.

Thanks for your help.

the search button is helpful on the upper right.

the blitzsafe and icelink are popular here.

If your looking for the best quality MP3 isnt the way to go because the sound quality is crap. But if you don't care much about getting the best quality then I'd go with blitzsafe for your iPod

Get the blitzsafe. And don't even worry about removing the radio, u don't need too. You just need to remove the wood trim and the knee panel on the passengers side which takes about 5 minutes. Then just reach behind the radio and plug it in. It just takes a little patience to reach back there and plug it in the right way.

Thanks for the quick and solid answers everyone. I have one fiollow up question: Has anyone used the USA Spec iPod connection unit? I always go through Crutchfield.com for my auto sound needs and that is the unit they carry. I won't go into an ad for Crutchfield here but I would prefer to go through them, if I can.

Buy from enfigcarstereo. Just do a search on them here. A lot of people have brought from them (including myself). They're very good.

But if you still want to go through crutchfield the USA Spec seems like a good unit. I've never used it, but when I was searching on info to buy my blitzsafe I read pretty good things about the USA Spec.

Should be the HON / M-LINK1 DMX V.1

If you have a CD changer and want to keep using it you need to get,
BlitzSafe HON/M-Link1 DMX V.1D

I'm selling my blitz safe adapter. I'm also including an extension so that you can run it to your center console. Let me know if you're interested.

I went with the Peripherial. Before I was using the tape adapter, but got tired of the battery running down. You would not believe the sound quality difference going to the cd changer adapter! That is not to mention being able to use the steering wheel controls to change the song, and the ability to run the connector to where ever you can imagine. I've had it about 6 months with no problem. Crutchfield carrys it for about $150, I got mine for less than $100 on ebay. Good luck!

The older blitz safe adapters did not have a built in charger. I think the newer one's now do.

Since you have Navi system you should add Navi/TV Convert system so you can watch Video from Ipod or Itouch through Navi system.

The blitzsafe came yesterday and when I got home from work I ran out the garage to install it. Took all of about 15-20 minutes total, from start to finish. 1/2 that was trying to get my big fingers behind the stereo so I wouldn't have to take the radio out. With the help of a small screw driver I used to help guide the top down and in, and two fingers (all I could get behind the unit) it snapped right in. Works great!!

I ran the cord up through the space between the coin holder and the little plastic tray under it (between where the heated seat switches are). I want to run the cord somewhere else, like maybe into the center console box, but not sure yet. As it was late, I didn't have time really check out other options last night. But this will work for now, until I get back from a road trip....no more CD's

Where did everyone run their cord to?

Sorry I don't have picture until this weekend (camera at MOM house)
You can run the wire from right side of the radio up to your cup holder though 12v charger plug to the armrest to driver right side arm. With no drilling holes. I thing it's perfect spot for Ipod to be at.

Here picture with the cup holder lid area remove (very dirty)
I use that opening to run my wire through from blitzsafe.

Here is a closer view. Since I have old style blitzsafe i had to add my own Ipod charger connection.
The wire I'm using also let me play video with my Navi/TV convert. The other adapter plug is for my DVD player.

It close with no problem an you can pull wire back & forth

I've had the blitzsafe for years, and I just upgraded the cable so it will charge my iPhone as well. Cost another 20 bucks. Much better than having a car charger IMO.

I've got the wire coming out from under the center console between the driver seat. I then just let the iPod sit in between the seat heater buttons. Works like a charm, and it's out of the way. No messing with the cup holders, or center console storage area. I don't have pics of it, but if anyone wants it I will snap some when I get home.

Edit: Oh - and using a direct port like the blitzsafe is 90% better than that silly tape adapter. The sound quality is crystal clear, it's loud, and your ipod gets charged. When you turn the car off, you don't even have to touch the ipod. It automatically stops playing the music, and returns to charging. Perfect! When you get back in the car and start it, just press the play button and away you go!

Thanks AznWay! that was exactly what I wanted to do...well sorta
I'm going to re-run the wires tomorrow!

I actually wanted to get the wire up to the storage compartment and into the cup holder and leave it there. I hate having to wrap/tuck the wires under the coin holder. I just want to close my cup holder and hide it. Cuz in Philly you gotta be

Only reason I have to use that type of car charger is b/c that only way them Ipod AV wire can in. Also in the middle between my heat seat button is my DVD eye.

hANDYcaptd
My Ipod is ALWAY in the storage compartment area. The only time it come out is when I'm using it or driving. I do agree with you.You have to me very carefully there days
