installing auxillary audio jack for a car
Does anyone know how this can be done?
I want to install a jack on my dad's 2001 Mitsubishi Montero Sport. It currently has a CD player only, but I do want to install a audio jack.
Is this an incredibly hard job to do?

Yeah, basically. I'm working under the impression that it will work for any device that uses the audio jack. Other MP3 players, laptops, video players or anything that will use the car's speakers as sound output.
I'm not too worried about opening my dash apart or soldering, I can do all that fine, I just need an idea of where to start.

One guy in another forum ended up buying a new head unit with a aux input... Which might be NOT be a very expensive route if you think about it... a lot of places have free installation now a days... some decent CD head units with aux input in the front I've seen for around $100
Just buy a new head unit. I don't know exactly what you'll need to do, but I doubt it will be worth the time and effort. You can always just buy a Sony head unit with an aux-in right in the front of the head unit, and also get increased functionality and better sound. Sony just came out with a few new head units for 2007-08 also. Had one in my old car and liked it a lot, got my brother one with a USB input and he loves it, even with his '85 4runner's crap original speakers.
Getting a head unit with aux-input will allow you to play anything (mp3 player, laptop, etc) with the use of a 3.5mm male-male cable. Making your own aux-input would probably involve buying a few electrical parts and splicing wires together.
I know Circuit City does free installations on basic head units $99 and up, and they use solder and shrink tubing.

There is no way I would let CC or BB touch my car. I'll buy a head unit there, but never let them install anything.
