Imaging Question
I have a 02 cl-s, I am currently running a Alpine CDA-9886 (running stock Mids and Highs) and a JL 10w3v3 with a 250/1 running it. I have a friend that will sell me (Brand new) either a JBL PX 300.4 or a PX 600.2 as well as a set of JBL C608GTI MKII 6.5 speakers for the front doors. His suggestion is to not run any back speakers and use the 600.2 I have always had 4 speakers in my cars and I am afraid I may not like the all the sound coming from the front. What do you guys think?
Going from 4 speakers to just up front speakers is different. I remember when I first went that route, it was totally different because I was use to hearing music from behind me, but then I got used to it, plus I found the love for music. Now I will never go back to having rear speakers unless it is for surround sound for movies.
I wouldnt do it. I think the sound would be off since the TL is a large car. That route might sound better if used in a small car. I would up-grade the rear speakers to at least some decent coax speaker to get a nice rear fill. Thats my

If you're really interested in running this type of SQ setup look at some better front components and a better amp.
having a well tuned front stage will yield you better results than running a front stage + rear fills. BUT this is going to be an issue of speaker placement up front and utilizing time alignment either through a capable headunit or aftermarket processor (ie 701). And yes, utilizing time alignment and either a headunit or signal processor with 2 or 3 way active crossovers/ independent l/r equalization can be a breathtaking experience both in terms of dynamics and imaging. But it requires tons of tuning and time. I'm running a premier prs 880 with a dls a4 amp pushing each of my front tweets and mids independently and actively through the 880 with no rearfill and a separate eclipse sub amp...and let me tell you, it blows my old setup with rearfill and no time alignment out of the water. If you're into having an accurate front soundstage then I suggest ditching the rearfills and going the active route with time alignment. A properly tuned active front setup can have the same or even better 'surround' effect than using rearfills. But again, it takes a crapload of tuning to get it to sound right for each installation, so there's pros and cons.
