How much room to mount speakers in 2nd Gen TL?

Does anyone know the max mounting depth between the front door and the window is?

I am about to order some MB Quart Components with a 2 3/8" mounting depth and debating on how big of a spacer I would need for the speaker not to hit the window.

I was thinking about 1", but I'm afraid it might hit the stock speaker grill. If anyone has had any experience with this, please chime in!

I don't know the exact available space, but 1" should be fine with that mounting depth. Of course you could remove the door panel and measure for yourself just to make sure.

You should be able to fit that with a modified stock spacer, just cut the back off with a hacksaw. I installed a set of Phoenix Gold rsd6cs components using both the stock spacer(about 3/4") and a 3/4" mdf spacer. I thought the mdf sounded better but I didn't seal them very well and they rotted. I think you will be fine up to 2.6" either way.

So there really isn't any need for shallow mount speakers? If the same model comes in shallow mount would you avoid them?

I would avoid shallow mount if you can. You will get better midbass response from a deeper speaker usually, as long you have sufficiently dampened the doors. Take the door panel off and measure. There is room for a decent woofer.

Why not call crutchfield. Just say you were looking at the speakers there off and you'd like to know speaker dimensions for your model TL. They'll be glad to help you.

Do not call crutchfield. Step 1 quit being lazy. Step 2 take your door panel off and measure the depth. Step 3 Read my comments above: 3/4 spacer is what you want.

LOL... Okay you said what i wanted to say but there will def be cutting involved because a lot choose to do shallow mounts so they don't have to.

There is no cutting involved, unless you mean the factory spacer or cutting mdf to make a new spacer. Door sheetmetal does not have to be cut.

I tried to install Mpyre mids which did not go well, but standard sub 3" deep drivers should be no problem. Remember to create a gasket seal around the front of the driver to the door panel, so ALL the speaker's output reaches the cabin instead of getting caught in the door itself.
