How to Create DVD-A (stereo / 2 channel) from CD, MP3, WAV

I'm new to the forum. Thanks, everyone, for the great info posted here.

I just got a 2005 TL (NAV) and love the car. I was a bit disappointed the TL doesn't support MP3s since I like putting ~85 songs on one disc, but with information from this thread, I figured out how to achieve the equivalent with DVD-A. Other posts deserve the credit for the info. This is merely a consolidation of info to help newer folks. I hope it's useful.

GOAL: Use the TL's DVD-A feature to support a disc with 80-90 stereo songs. These will be in standard 2-channel stereo format (not 5.1 surround)

I. SOURCE: Starting with standard Audio CD
1. Download, install & launch a program to convert Audio CDs to MP3 or WAV
a. Example: Windows Media Player
2. Use Menu: Tools -> Options -> "Rip Music" tab
a. Set "Rip settings" format to MP3
b. Set the "Audio Quality", e.g. 192Kbps
c. Check the "Rip CD when inserted" option
d. Click OK on these settings
3. Insert your Audio CDs one-by-one and rip them to MP3
4. If you used a program to convert to WAV, go go step III
5. If you used a program to convert to MP3, go to step II
II. SOURCE: Starting with MP3 files
1. Download, install, & launch a program to convert MP3 files to WAV files
a. Example: "Power MP3 WMA Converter"
http://www.cooolsoft.com
2. Use <F4> to set the directory to store the converted files
3. Use <F2> file open to add your MP3 files to the list
4. Use <F5> to convert the highlighted file(s)
5. Note: must register to convert more than one file at a time
6. Now you have the WAV files needed to create the DVD-A disc

III. SOURCE: Starting with WAV files
1. Download, install, & launch "discWelder CHROME"
http://www.minnetonkaaudio.com
a. Comment: this is a bit of money, but it is the one I found that works
2. In the upper left pane, click on the directory with your WAV files
3. In the lower pane, right click on the Album and click "Album Properties"
a. Uncheck "On-Screen Menu"
b. Click the "NoVIDEO_TS" radio button
c. Change "Track Defaults" to "Stereo (L,R)"
d. Click OK
4. In the lower pane, right click on the Album and click "New Group"
5. In the upper right pane, double click on the WAV file(s) to add to the disc

NOTE: The TL will allow you to access the standard 9 "Groups" on a DVD-A
- You can right-click on Album and create add'l groups to group your songs
- In the TL, hold RPT and SCAN in together to change groups

NOTE: There is really no reason to name the album, group, or songs
- The TL will not display the album, group, or song information on the screen

6. Finish adding the desired songs (WAV files) to the image (bottom pane)

NOTE: Use standard, blank, "DVD-R" discs from an office supply store
- The TL user manual says these will not work, but they will.
- Example: "Memorex DVD-R 8x 4.7GB 120min video DVD"
- I haven't tried others, but I hear other brands work, too.

7. Insert the blank DVD-R disc into your DVD burner
8. Still in DiscWelder, press the "Record" button in the top menu
9. A window will appear. Confirm the drive noted is your DVD burner. Click OK.
IV. Testing in the Car
1. Eject a disc or press Load to allow your new DVD-A to be inserted
2. Insert the DVD-A disc
3. The car will note it's a DVD-A disc
4. The Group1 songs should start playing
5. To go to the next group, hold RPT and SCAN for a few seconds

NOTE: If the car ejects your disc with an error ...
- You may have tried a cheaper software package than DiscWelder
- You may have had a bad burn sessino for your DVD
- You may be using a disc other than "DVD-R" (DVD+R is not the same)
- You may be using a brand that doesn't work (not sure what all works)

Answers to Some Common Questions
- The TL cannot play DVD-V (movies) on the screen
- The TL will not play the sound from a DVD-V
- The DVD-A feature will allow >80 songs in 2-channel stereo format
- The DVD-A feature will allow fewer songs in 5.1 surround sound
- DiscWelder can be used to create DVD-A in stereo or 5.1 format
- Basically, any sound file can be converted into WAV to use with DiscWelder

Other posts have information on:
- Using "DVD Audio Extractor" to get audio from DVD-V then rip to DVD-A
- DVD-A specs
- Car mods to have a nav screen that plays DVD-V

Very interesting! Not sure how I missed this thread when it was new...

Using this tool discWELDER, what kind of DVD discs are you writing? (I'm trying to figure out what format it converts to from .WAV, and what somebody would need to do to use NERO).

Thanks! Must not be supported in my Nero 5.5--doesn't list DVD-A as an option... (I don't need it, I have an mp3 changer, just trying to understand and get the info for people with newer cars).

Also, just in case it's not obvious, if you can...rip directly to WAV files. Ripping to MP3s will decrease the sound quality.
