Question HELP ME figure this one out!!!

I've got an 01 CL-S and the OEM CD Changer/Player started acting up with an intermittent ERR-R code problem which turned permanent 6 mos ago - 6 CD's are loaded and ALL are originals - they won't play or eject, and when I push the "CD" button, it gives me an ERROR message and switches to the Stereo. I tried disconnecting the battery, resetting the code, using a knife to dig at the CD's, etc... I consulted my Service Advisor - he looked at it, did the mini-screwdriver probe, said it usually happens with home-made labeled burned CD's and since they weren't, he concluded that the head unit was probably toasted.

So, I placed a "WTB" ad here, and got a replacement from a fellow member that removed it for an aftermarket upgrade. He assured that it worked fine!
Upon installation yesterday, I went to test it before putting everything back together, and what do you know!???... I'm STILL getting the "CHECK" then ERROR message.

So, the first thing I think is that I got ripped off for the unit. BUT, I can HEAR the CD player cycling and moving to reset after I plug in the PIN and push "CD" and "LOAD", so I know that the CD player is working! BUT, there is still an error code coming thru - the Stereo and Tape Player work fine - this is isolated to ONLY the CD player's function! ...I just don't get it!

Could there be a wiring short issue or a computer chip failure somewhere?

Is the CD Player hooked to the PCM or any other module that could be effecting it this way?

I'm am totally perplexed!!! This does NOT make sense!!!

Any intelligent insight would truely be appreciated!

Thanks

Hi. That does seem odd that two players gave you the same error, but only on the CD. No, the headunit is not dependent on anything else for processing, BUT a faulty something plugged in to the CD changer port might act like this. Do you have a seperate cd changer or anything else plugged in there? If so, I'd try disconnecting it. If not, I think it might be time to think about a system upgrade.

The CD changer/player is attached to the main unit; and the pin plugin goes into the receiver part. I called a couple Dealers and they said that if the CD unit gives an error code without CD's in it, then the unit is probably bad...so it's possible that the unit I bought is no good! I've contacted a guy locally that has one and I will be meeting him in a couple days to see if his works ok as the Dealer's want $800 for a brand new HU!
