help choosing audio set up
hey all:
i am trying to upgrade the audio system in my 08 tsx w/ navi. i don't want 4 subs, i don't want to set off other cars' alarms. i would a nice crisp loud sub. was thinking of getting 2 SWR-1043Ds in a ported box. i found a good deal on craigslist.
anybody have any experience with these subs?
the subs are each 600 watts rms, with two of them do you all think they will be obnoxious?
should i switch them to a sealed box?
what type of amp should i use?
thanks guys, i know hardly anything about car audio. from what ive been told is that i would run the amp from the rear speakers, turn down the bass on the navi unit, and turn up the bass on the amp.
thanks for the help

To me, 1200watts worth of woofers is definitely obnoxious. Home theater systems in homes typically stay between 50-300watts. I think the quality of the manufacturing is the more important measurement. But, it's your system and you should make it sound the way you want to sound.
One quality 8-10" woofer will add plenty of bass to a system and not require serious power management. If you set crossovers to the regular speakers (make them produce all the frequencies the woofer can not) your system will be much more balanced since the regular speakers will focus on higher frequencies.

I never really liked Alpine woofers but there alright and reliable.
Here what i tell everyone to do when asked.
-Get 2 pairs of aftermarket speakers. It's not necessary but a 4 channel amp would be nice.
-Then work on getting woofers.
-Trust me you will be much happier.
Im running all Rockford components, Alpine M-1000, (2) Treo TE, and (2) pairs of Infinity kappa 63.9. I really like my set up but i miss my 12W7 just cause of the trunk space and it hit really good as well. Oh yeah rockford 6x9s but there disconnected.
-I did all the wiring myself except harness/tapping the navi. Running the #4 wire was hard getting past the fire wall but then everything was down hill from there. Even installing the speakers was easy.
-Oh yeah always get a ported box unless if the woofer say sealed only.
-If you want 2 woofers at a good price get rockford p3's can't beat it 150ea.
-One woofer JLW7, Rockford T2, Sound Stream SPLX-122HX.
-Those would be my picks from my experience just throwing suggestions out there for you and others.

i was thinking of upgrading the speakers first, but i feel that they are soo nice already haha that putting a sub in first would be best. i really only need one 10 inch sub, just need to find a good one. thanks guys

you CANNOT go wrong with JL Audio sub.... one sub is plenty for some thump, when i turn mine up it POUNDS and is super clean and clear...sounds excellent with the factory speakers
JL 12w3 is an amazing sub, put it in a sealed box for a loud PUNCH with great hitting power, or throw it in a ported box for a deeper lower frequency sound
I recommend 300-600 watts RMS for this sub, from a QUALITY amp not some $80 amp off ebay (rockford fosgate, JL amp, alpine, clarion amps are nice)
I know absolutely nothing about sound systems on a car so I just wanted to confirm something... I know some other members have commented about it in the previous posts but I want to make sure I'm understanding correctly.... You can can keep your factory speakers and just add a sub(with an amp to power that sub of course) to get extra kick on the low ends?
correct....
stock everything, but add this $20 part called a Line Output Converter (LOC) which allows you to tap into both of your rear speakers...+ and - for left speaker, + and - for right speaker, this allows you to run a RCA wire (red and white wires) to your amp
once this is done, just follow any simple DIY on amp installation, or if your uncomfortable doing all this go to best buy or something and just buy one of their amp/subwoofer combos.... most of the time they will install for free or for a small charge, then you have a legitimate warranty on all your gear since it was professionally installed

I'm running 1 12" JL W6 ported and its more then enough for me. Line converter from the rear subs and power line is all it took. Stock door speakers for now, but I have some Polk Audio 6.5 components and 6x9 sets that I will be installing soon. I have a set of Memphis 6.5 also I will be using. Once I pick up a nice amp they will go in. Stock speakers sound good once you add a sub and balance out the bass.
I think every subwoofer thread goes down this path on this site

Please, go to a competition and tell me how many people you see running either Treo or Diamond. I'd guess maybe 1-2 Treo guys and nobody running Diamond. Those are higher end (ish) woofers that everyone still has access to. Most of what you'll see in the competition lanes can't be bought in stores, or if they can, a very few select store...
You guys are taking this a bit off-course. The OP wants to add some mild punch to the bass and possibly upgrade the mid/high as well. He's not looking for five thousand watts of subwoofers to enter glass-breaking competitions.
If JL/Treo/Diamond make a nice subwoofer for a good price, they fit the OP's request.
