Hardwiring XM radio, have questions b4 i cut any wire?

I just mounted my satilite radio by my radio on the passenger side (i screwed it to the plastic panel right under the fake wood) and i tucked all the wires behind the plastic except for the power wire..I have a passport 8500 and XM so i had to buy a 2-1 socket at radio shack but now its all clutered buy my shifter and gets in the way sometimes when i put in drive or park so i want to hardwire the XM to the wires coming right from the back of the cigerette lighter. So I think this is what I am suppose to do but PLEASE correct me if im wrong. I cut the XM power wire closer to the end where the cig plug is and strip the plastic till i get to metal. Then i strip the plastic from a portion of the wires behind the cig adapter and just wrap metal to metal red from xm to red from cig wire and metel to metal black wire from xm to black wire from cig lighter, BUT DO NOT cut wire from cig lightes just cul plastic around wires to expose metal and just wrap so i can still use the 12v outlet.

IS this correct I do not want to cat my XM radio wire till i know its right so thanks for your help guys!

A volt meter goes a long way even if you don't know what you're doing

How did you fry it? Sounded in theory like you had it down.. Connect the wrong wires?

yeah i guess i connected the wrong wires..
The xm radio power wire was not marked so i just guessed, my first guess did not work so i tried again not knowing how much bad can be done, in the meantime the two exposed wires touced sparked car shut down for a sec and then started throwing codes and running like crap. codes pulled were p0300 p0302, p0304, p0305 and p1399. I did some searching and replaced a coil pack in cylinder 4 and problem solved..I dunno if it the codes had anything to do with me messing around with the wires but the metel spring in the coil pack that was bad was melted and burnt....
I will leave electrical to the pros!!

Yea your not supposed to cut the plug off of the power wire. buy a cig plug adapter with a female end that is fused you can buy them at best buy for 9.99 and wire that in the the wires behind the cig plug but make sure its not a constant 12v with a digital multimeter.
