TL: Fuse holder melting?
Fuse holder melting?
Once again, I would like if you guys can help me troubleshoot a problem as I have no clue why this is happening
. My system has been running fine for about 1 year. About a week ago I smelled a funky smell, popped the hood and saw pic 1 (without the black tape bc I added that later and it melted again).
Let me start off with what I have: 2 Optima Yellow tops, 0 gauge wire throughout the car, Rockford Fosgate T20001BD amp, 2 12" Alpine Type-X subs, custom ported/tuned box, stock alternator, and big 3 upgrade.
I have the Big 3 in 0 gauge. That is alternator to battery, battery to body, and body to motor (I hope this is correct
.)
From the YT1 (Yellow Top up front) there is a 0 gauge wire running to a 300 amp fuse/holder (see pic for problem). That then runs throughout the car to the YT2 (Yellow Top in the trunk). From there, that YT2 is also grounded to the body, then there's 0 gauges from + and - to the amp.
I've noticed it happens after I've been running my system for a while. I do blast my system almost all the time. Please don't tell me to turn my music down or anything stupid like that
, I'm looking for a solution to fix this problem without that.
The negative terminal on YT2 tends to get very hot along with the melted end of the fuse hold as shown in the pic. The pic is also upside down, sorry I couldn't fix that.
So could it be a crappy fuse holder? or more than that? could the fuse be too many amps? Also, can you guys recommend any good fuse holder I should buy as I will def need a new one now.
Any and all help is appreciated so I thank you in advance
.

I'm not too knowledgeable when it comes to high power systems (I'm barely pushing 600 watts to my fronts and sub combined) but I do remember when I had my Audiobahn Immortal sub in my old accord with a 1000 watt Audiobahn amp and knew less about car audio I kept melting the fuse holder because I was buying the cheapest ones I could find and it generated a lot of resistance/heat and kept melting like yours has. So maybe upgrading to a better fuse holder might help?
Thanks for the help guys. For the moment I've ordered a Rockford Fosgate 200 amp circuit breaker so lets see if that does the job. The system has had nothing changed in almost a year, but I guess the crappy fuse holder started to give out somehow. I hope thats all it is.

I've had small fuses melt on me in my battery compartment...but I think the temp in there ends up getting too hot.
Based on my knowledge of electric...was the fuse in it's holder VERY tightly? If it wasn't...there will be some arcing which translates into heat which will eventually melt the fuse, the holder, or both.
Just some ideas. Hopefully your 200 amp breaker will work!

if the fuse is melting, it can usually be due to two things... water causing a short/arch.... or overheat of the plastic causing it to melt... i have only melted the smalled fuses in the past... with the in-line fuse for the amps, try your new breaker first... maybe look at where you are placing the fuse... maybe look for a place where it can get some airflow to keep it cooler vs burying it close to the hot engine block...

Well, it's like a house breaker, they're intended to a certain amount of time before they go bad because the contact point gets weaker...but it's probably going to last for quite a while and this way he ain't spending $10 on a fuse every time.
