First part of this thread will be to thanks member Southbound :bowdown:
for his exhaustive research on how to upgrade the Bose radio
system of our without changing anything else but the speakers.
I have to admit that this was one of the more interesting thread
i've ever saw on a car Forum.

wat about polk audio db 650 6-1/2" speakers or
polk audio ex 365 6-1/2" speakers? Are those just as good sounds as the polk audio dx6. I really want to get the db 650 series, since they have them on sale for $160 for two pairs.

i took would like to get the db 650 series.. they arn't that deep, i think they should fit.. they would sound great with an amp.. I've used tons of polk speakers, for home and car audio, they are really great with some good power fed to them.

At any given time, there is usually a pair of Polk DX6 (or any other model, for that matter) on eBay. That's where I got mine ($30+ shipping), and I'm very happy with them. Of course, you have to know what to look out for, because there are some shady eBayers on there....
Right now I'm looking on there for some Polk 6x9s for the rear deck on my CL-S.

PS I just have to say that Blose is pure crap, no matter what. I am amazed at their abilty to fool everyone with their marketing hype and pseudo-science!

Hi neighbour!

No luck the price is in US funds.
But on the good side Canadian money is getting a better exchange rate these days.... :p

With the shipping it came to a total of $121.10USD
Still waiting to receive them, (they were ship on sept. 16)
Ship via USPS to avoid expensive brokers fees...

After i receive them i will also go for the Southbound mod.
Seems like a good option for an inexpensive upgrade.

What kind of Acaura do you own?
(Model,year,color)
Do live in Montreal too?

Hi optiq,

To get louder sound from your HU only one option:
bypass the EQ (kind of tricky with the Blose of ours) and add an amp.
Adding speakers will NOT do that, more adding better speakers
will only LOWER your volume capability, heavy magnets and better
speakers will need more power to create sound so that equal LESS volume.
On the other hand it will definitively give you BETTER sound quality.
As for how much ? It is difficult to answer something like that.
What are your needs? What kind of budget do you have? What are you looking for?

Hi njtls,

Like I said above adding good speakers wont give you louder music.
Adding Polk DX-6 speakers will only improve the sound quality.
Most Acura owners go for the DX-6 because the EQ used with
the HU doesn't sound good with all speakers upgrade.
They will also fit in your car without mods,
and also because they are not too expensive.

Bonjour,

I just bought a Naples gold 2000 TL a few weeks ago.
Already upgraded the sound system and installed wood trim.
OEM spoiler and wings kit should both be installed within a week or two.
Also installing a new subwoofer pretty soon.
I think i will stop spending after that... :p

I did take a look at your gallery, nice car by the way.

Hi vtec11,

I will wait to have the OEM spoilers & wing installed before
taking & posting pics.
I'll probably make a before and after the kit installation gallery.


As for the sound system upgrade, i went for an economical solution.
I installed 2 Polk DX6 in the front with the "Southbound" mod on them.
(A small soldering modification with capacitors and resistances)

Let me tell you that this mod alone (don't forget for less then $125usd)
is VERY effective, it did change my sound quality from poor to decent! :p
If you would like the how-to, just look for member Sask32TL
in dx6 project thread he has generously posted a zip file to help
others!

Still after that inexpensive mod i was looking for more and better
bass response so i did take member "otay" offer to split the
purchase of a pair of Kicker RMB8. I'll probably change at the
same time the Blose sub amp.

Just my $0.02, but you're better off with the Image Dynamics CTX6 series coaxes.

I've tried both the Polks and the ID's and the ID's are a superior speaker IMHO while fitting the stock mounting identically to the Polk. See my mods page for more info.

Again, this is just my opinion. The Polks didn't impress me at all.

Hi buzzchem,

I've look at your setup, very impressive work you've done there
I would not even try to compare the results...

Only, we have to remember that your upgrade is much more
then a simple switch of the front speakers.
I'm sure there are a lot of better speakers then the Polk DX-6
out there on the market but they won't necessarily play better
if you keep the OEM HU and EQ. The moment you take these out
then it is a new ball game. Then money & preferences talks....

Should you have kept the original HU & EQ they would have
been good chances that the Polk would have sound better then
the Dynamics. The OEM EQ does have a way to modify the sound
so the paper Blose don't sound too crappy and even when you change
them you will still get stuck with the same output.. unless you bypass the
EQ and add another amp. That's why Polk have been choosen by
many, they are very good with the unmodified output

Final word in my IMHO, there is a lot of better upgrades, but for a
simple change of speakers without changing HU or bypassing
EQ and for less then a $100 there is probably none better. Like i said
earlier this mod will only turn your sound quality from poor to decent,
don't expect nothing more or you will be deceived.

Can any one of you point me to the instruction on how to get to the stock speakers? would I have to remove the door panel to get to the ones in the front? How about the rear?
