focal 165k2 vs boston pro 6.5?

thoughts on these 2 speakers. I haven't heard either. I'm fairly certain I would be satisfied with either. I ordered bostons but they are out of stock and they offered focals in the event I wanted speakers right away. Cost is roughly the same. MBQ's in my friend accord sound too bright so I wanted something different. any opinions?

Are those Focals the Polykevlars or the Utopia line?

I've been searching eliteaudio for a while and I'm still not positive. Most people there are focal fans. Some have argued the bostons not as good at high volumes. Some have said both are too bright. Focals have more midbass than the bostons. Then some have said 165k2 isn't as good as 165v's. The reason I went with boston in the first place was because I felt mbq's were too harsh, and 2 friends of mine recommended the bostons. The only thing I hear about focals are from msg boards.

boston pros are not harsh at all. and they sound clean to me...plus for the price, i think it's a good buy. the infinities and mbq, i felt were really ear bleeding harsh....although the mbquartz's mids were incredibly clear. you'll have to listen to each one cuz each person has a different ear for things.

Well, I bought the Boston's over the poly's...I can't afford UJtopias. The Bostons will be paid for and go in by July...but they may not go into this car, I am really thinking about selling it. Stupid POS dealer.

The MB Quarts are bright unless you turn down the tweeter DB. I have mine set for -6 on the crossovers. They sound perfect.

MB's are really bright... and only sound good to most people if tuned properly. Personally, I dont like the sound of them. I am a die-hard Boston person... I have their stuff at home and in my car. Love it, and cant beat the price. Their Pro line is some sick gear... If I could afford it, it'd be in my car... but im not that well-off, so I gotta stick with the Rally line of components and generator subs.

Focals are way to damn expensive for me... they do sound good though.

I'd go with the Bostons!

focal utopias are really expensive, but the PK's are inline with the pro series.

I cant speak for the Bostons but I had MB Quartz and currently own Focals Polys, all I can say is the Focals rock....
Once you get those, you wouldnt want to switch to anything else.

I have all Boston's. Pro's up front. 6X9 Rallies in the back and two 10 inch Boston Subs. Very crisp/clear sound, to me truly a music lovers speaker.

I love them. When I bought them the MB's were the only speakers I compared them with. I thought the Bostons sounded allot better then the MB's. It's really a matter of your ear. Always buy what you think sounds best.

go with the focals....hopefully in a few months..I'll put in the 165k2's - for the rear, 27k for front, pushing with Brax amps....I was able to listen to this setup in Sacramento and it sounded tight, clean, and had a good punch to it. For the trunk..12" Kicker L7s...I cant wait..maybe if I win in tahoe it'll be sooner than later...hahha

Personally, I don't know much about the focal, but I used to have the 6.5 Boston pro series in front of my CLS and they sound very clear to me. The thing that I like the Boston pro series is even though the volume is turned up loud, but my ears are not hurt much at all. Right now, I have the Boston Z6 in my car, and they just solid rock. They are even twice as much better than the pro series, and I am loving it.

Peace

I just sold my set of focal utopias 165Ws 2-ways. I think they were the best compared to MBQs, Boston Zs, and Dynaudio. You should really audition all of them and judge for youself. I'm purchasing the utopia 3-ways next.

In my opinion, the speakers of system are important in SQ, but not as important as a source unit that has the ability to fully tune the entire system. You guys should look into that instead of putting so much emphasis on speakers.

Audio

I would definately with the poly's rather the bostons. I'm currently running CDT HD's in my car and would definately recommend it. I got mines from thezeb.com They're really good with shipping and NO TAX!

I have the 165 Utopias up front..and the 165K mid ranges in the back..they are absolutely clear... and can handle tons of power.. I just need to solder my front tweeter so that the signal doesn't bleed... the electrical tape was just a temporary solution so that I could get the door panels back on..
but...

p.s. I'm wonderin' what frequency I should tone up the EQ for the front soundstage? and should the frequencies for the rear sub overlap the soundstage? or should I break one where the other begins? Thanks.

Ah now for tuning. All of that depends, we can't say for sure "yes, take -3 out of 250Hz, overlap this, etc." You do not want to overlap the sub tho. On lower frequencies it will cause phase problems, possible cancellation. You never want different sized drivered playing together under 250Hz or so. Overlapping can be good in the mid range cross, but you won't be able to do it properly with a simple crossover. It requires altered curves, delays, etc. I would simply cross the sub over at say 80Hz to start with, and then just EQ to your taste. Listen closely, and pick out what is wrong. If it sounds muddy, take out 250-500Hz. If it sounds dull, add some air around 10-14KHz. Vocals sound dull? 1-4KHz. What kind of EQ do you have? In-radio like three band or 31 band ISO?

Many shops use RTAs (real time analizer) to tune a system flat, then EQ to taste from here. I disagree with the RTA part stongly. In professional audio, RTA is a dirty word. RTAs have NO respect for time, and therefore DO NOT truly represent what is being presented. It throws the balance between the lows and highs off. If you EQ a car to where it has a flat RTA curve, a TEF (time energy frequency) curve would look all messed up. This is why there were such differences between an RTA setting and a SQ setting.

Proaudio22--

thanks for your detailed response. I'll stay away from overlapping just for cancellations sake. As for the EQ, I was going to use a combination of adjustments from the headunit and the amp. I'm not using a separate line from my HU just yet..so for now, I will need to use the Highpass filter on the amp.
