Fine tuning the Audio

Ok, now I have had the system a while, I'd like to fine tune it . I'd like more midrange. The bass is great and the highs are clear but the middle sounds weak.

The amps are a Tantrum 500.2 for the subs (2 10" PG Ti) and a Tantrum 600.4 for all four doors (PG Ti Elite6: 6" driver, 1.85" tweeter).

The (passive) crossover for the components is 3kHz and the Acoustic Crossover Slopes are 24 dB per octave. Nominal impedence is 4 Ohms. Frequency response is +/- 1dB. 20Hz to 20kHz.

The 600.4 and 500.2 amps have a Frequency Response of +/- 1dB, 20Hz to 20kHz. S/N of greater than 100dB. Input sensitivity of 100millivolts to 4V. Crossover frequency is 40Hz to 800Hz. Crossover Slope is 18/dB per Octave. Bass Boost is 0 to +18dB@ 45hZ. Separate controls for the front and rear. Each also has Front and Rear config switches. I also have a remote for the 500.2 allowing 20dB of subwoofer volume adjustment. The HU has adjustments of Bass at 100Hz and Treble at 10kHz. Range is +/- 8 dB (2dB per step).

I am trying not to mess with it too much (ie the config switches) but I am willing to tinker with the crossover settings unless someone who really knows there audio tells me otherwise.

I listen to a variety of music. The majority is rock but I also like jazz, blues and some classical guitar (Otmar Liebert). No rap.

So my question for those that know the TL's acoustics is where are the ideal settings? Do the subs and mids actually have to overlap? Is there some frequencies that can be "left out" and actaully befefit the sound quality? My longest post ever, thanks for reading!

It's kind of like asking "What's the best car?". If it sucks as far as you're concerned, change it! Who gives a crap what anybody else thinks?

After you're done tweaking who the hell cares if you've filtered out all but 300 to 400 Hz. If that's the sound you want, go for it...

If you want to do a serious analysis, just go to the nearest reputable car audio shop (especially if they're big into the sound-of cometitions). They'll have a real-time spectrum analyzer and can do a plot of the car's acoustics. With that you can play with crossover points or just buy an in-dash equalizer to adjust the response....

When I had my car in pieces, I had the audio go through my sound processing equipment. 2 31 band 1/3 octave EQs.

I ran pink noise through and flattened the response on my spectral anaylzer...

It was incredible. Of course, opening a window, moving a seat, or anything like that destroys it and you have to redo the EQ from the changing dynamics...but I'd say it was 2 hours well spent for 5 minutes of excellent studio-tuned audio.
