BlackBeauty,
The problem with keeping the stock HU and adding an aftermarket amp, is that PART of the stock EQ must be bypassed in order to feed the new amp and new speakers with a flat response. The Blose HU/EQ uses floating grounds with differential inputs and outputs as well as a compressor. Engine whine and electrical noise can easily enter the new system if the bypass technique is not strictly followed.
Below is a link to the thread where Iggy and I solved the EQ bypass electrical noise problems. You will lose around 6db of overall volume in the process, but that can easily be made up for in the following amp.
Sorry for the long thread link, but it might help you to better understand the potential problem and solutions that were worked out by reading the entire thread. It also includes a good schematic drawn up by Iggy after we finally achieved success. It's definitely worth the effort if you're adding an extra amp! Lose that blose...

mag,
I never actually had any files, either jpeg or pdf that were related to the mods. Other nice people here created them for me, and helped to create the sticky.
Iggy was the one who came up with the schematic for the EQ bypass. He made a complete set of new schematics with instructions after we performed the work in the thread I linked above. Hopefully he can re-send them to you? I'm sure he still has updated files of the proper EQ bypass method.
Thanks for the help!

Ummmmmm, welllllllll, I'm kind of at a loss . I never got around to compiling all the info together into a single pdf, so someone else must have done it. Where did you get it originally? If you do come accross the mysterious PDF file I could host it.

My Mom passed away in April, and I have had a ton of work to do with estate arrangements. I'm finally at the point where I have more than a half hour a day on the computer.
I'm the one who re-created the schematic with Visio, added Y2KWPDTL's photos and compiled them into the PDF file.
I just read the message tonight and sent you the file via e-mail.
Too bad I didn't see the message a lot sooner...

Anyone interested in doing the DX6 mod, please let me know if you need a pair of DX6. I bought a used pair off Ebay awhile back for back up but I don't think I'll be needing it...the true is these suckers ain't going to break down i think...anyways, they are slightly used by the previous owner..I think he said he installed it and run it for a week or so then upgraded to something else. I've never used them since I bought them..if you need them, they're yours for $75 shipped..the price I bought it. Thx.

Hey Guys, sorry to be such a nag, but I would like to confirm that changing the stock front speakers of the TL Type S will make a huge improvement to the sound. Is this a fair statement? Will I be able to hear the difference with the DX 6 speakers?

Oh Yeah, You'll definitely hear it. The problem is.... once you start with one upgrade it will never be good enough, and you will be searching for the next better upgrade.
These speakers are probably very hard to locate these days, and I'm sure there are several alternatives... but these were the easiest to tweak to your personal taste and cheap because they were being discontinued a year ago.
Good luck with whatever replacement speaker/system you end up going with. ANYTHING is better than the stock blose. It just depends upon how much money and mod work to the door panel, door frame, spacer, etc. that you are willing to perform.
Good luck...
Sask, I'm very sorry for your loss. I lost my mother two years ago, and it's still a struggle some days....

I have the PDF file you're looking for. I re-sent it to Magiviper a while back, but he's probably busy with other stuff. If he hasn't had a chance to post it again, no problem...
I am attempting the file attachment thing for the first time here. I had to ZIP the file because the forum won't accept PDF files for upload. If it doesn't work, my e-mail address is:
jmackenzie3@shaw.ca
Just send me your e-mail, and I'll send you the file...

Ok i know no one has posted here in awhile and its sorta dead, but i have just recently read up on the whole dx6 project because i am looking for a cheap and easy upgrade to my tl. I just have a few questions.
If you are upgrading all four speakers, i have read somewhere that the volume has a drastic loss therefore you need to add an extra amp to boost the power and then bypass the eq. If you are bypassing the eq, then from my understanding your not using it anymore, therefor you don;t really have to get the polk dx6, you can really get any speaker that you can get to fit. Am i correct?? Because in the first place the main reason the dx6 was chosen was because it went well with the way the eq ouputed the sound.
My second question would be, is taking apart the whole dash to get to the eq and radio a hard job for an amateur who really has no expeirence in taking apart cars.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thx a lot.

DX6 project mods
Just getting around to doing something about the sound in my '02 TLS, and saw the DX6 project postings. Seems like just what I'm looking for, but the listed link doesn't bring it up. Mainly need to know about the highs attenuation and any impedance matching. Appreciate any help. Also, are DB650's interchangeable?

dordal, I have completed the polk mod about 8 months ago and now my sound cuts out after about 30 seconds. Is it possible that the terminals are grounding out against the door frame to produce this effect?
Thanks for any help!

Sorry to dig up an old post but I am installing 4 DX6 speakers and was wanting to do the mods that have discussed on here but none of the old, external pages are available. Does anyone still know where to get wiring instructions and photos of the mods?
Thanks...
Nate
