DVD/TV on Navi from AVElectronics anyone??
If anyone has done this conversion with this companies product, Please let me know about your experience:
1. Can it function through the navi screen? Only the AV remote?
2. Where did you put the unit and dvd player?
3. any praises or pitfalls/problems?
4.I have a '04 TL. Anyone do this on a '04 yet?
Any experiences from 2nd gen owners, please respond as well..
thanks..

Yep, I did it on a 2004 TL. It functions just fine on the factory navi screen. When the unit is turned off and I'm watching the navigation map the screen looks rock solid just like before, but when I turn the thing on and watch the output of the A/V switcher then I get a little bit of waviness (even with very expensive name brand video cables).
The TV Tuner/AV Switcher unit has fairly short cables (to keep the interference at a minimum), so you have no choice but to mount it in the trunk really close to the factory GPS computer. The cables are about 12" long and have to reach the factory GPS computer.
The DVD changer you can mount anywhere, but I chose to mount it in the trunk in order to minimize the length of the video cables.
TV reception in the car is awful.
Everytime you turn the car off, the TV Tuner/AV Switcher turns itself off. Even if the unit was turned on when you shut off the car, it will be turned off when you next start the car. You have to manually turn it on using the infrared remote.
I made the mistake of trying to feed an MP3 player into one of the inputs on the TV tuner/AV Switcher. It seemed to work fine at first, but the unit is pre-programmed to shut itself off after 60 seconds if there is no video input. Since my MP3 player is an audio-only device and I'm only using the audio inputs (and leaving the video input unused) you can see the problem I am having. There is a setting in the setup menu that will disable the 60-second auto-shutdown feature, but it forgets its setting everytime you shut off the car, which means that everytime you start the car you've got to mess with the infrared remote and navigate through a bunch of menu options and change things. It is such a P.I.T.A. that I ended up just installing a rearview camera to act as an always on video signal to accompany my MP3 audio just to keep the stupid thing turned on.
Have you noticed how when you start your car the Nav screen will display some stupid lawyer message, and if you don't click the "OK" button within about 30 seconds then the LCD screen will turn off? Well, the TV Tuner/AV Switcher unit cannot overcome this. You need to click the "OK" button if you want to see the video output of the TV Tuner/AV Switcher unit.
The DVD changer that I bought from them is defective. It will play CDs just fine, but will not play DVDs at all. It just displays "DISK ERROR" whenever try to play a DVD. I didn't realize this until after I installed it. I'll keep you all posted about how the company handles this problem.

Thanks Weeg
Weeg,
So you did it yourself. Can you describe the panels/interior that had to be pulled up/out for install?
Did you get the better antenna for the tv tuner also? do you think it would help if you don't have?
Also, can you control any functions for the tv tuner/dvd through the navi screen or is it all by IR remote?
I am planning on buying a DVD player separate as to have more freedom of choice. any suggestions?
I hope AV gets you situated soon with a new DVD. Do you think it might not be the player and the unit itself? Just wondering..

I can't really help you with any advice about the installation. I had a stereo shop do all the work. The shop is located in Woodland Hills, California. If anyone wants to have their car done at the same shop then just ask me for their phone number.
I didn't get the better TV antenna, but I don't really plan on ever watching TV so I didn't really care.
None of the functions are controllable from the touchscreen. You have to do everything from the Infrared remote.
Hey Weeeg.
Where did you have it done in WH?
What was your cost?
I'd really like to link a backup monitor into my 2004TL, and would like it to switch video inputs automatically when I put the car in reverse.
Any ideas?

I had it done at Sounds Good Stereo in Woodland Hills. They're a bit pricey, but their work is outstanding. It's hard to tell what the cost was (for the backup monitor) because I had so much done all at once. Just swing by their store and ask for an estimate.
