Dom Converter... Where to get power?

I have an 06 TSX. I just got the PNP converter and I am wanting to put the converter underneath the drivers seat. Where can I get power for it without having to take apart the center console?

I hooked it up to a set of red and black wires underneath the seat... it didn't work. I hooked the positive end directly to the fusebox... nothing. I then tryed to hook it up to one of the cigerat lighters but you have to take everything apart to get to the back of the lighter. Any suggestions? I have pics of where i hooked it underneath the seat if need be.

I won't be able to work on it again until tomorrow night. Any help is appreciated.

I Really don't want to take a shot in the dark and lead you in the wrong direction.

I'd post in the TSX side of the forum asking if someone can help you by looking in the Helms manual..

When I did mine I was looking for a good power set and didn't see anything obvious.

Check the top-left set of wires going into the rear of the dvd unit. The white w/ red stripe wire tested for 14v, so it should be good. I tried to test the black wire on the other side of it for ground but it wasn't a good ground according to my multimeter.

In the end I ran it off of the remote turn on line for my amp and the grount return I put in the trunk. This won't help you much if you don't already have an amp though, sorry.

Thanks for the help. I guess I will just have to bite the bullet and take apart the center console and hook it to the back of one of the cig lighters.

I did not want to run the wires for the switch up to the front and the wire for the video up to the front. The way I have it now I only have one wire running to the front... being a DB9 extension cable. I have it all hooked up now, got power from the cig lighter in the console... was a piece of cake, wish i would have done it to begin with.

NO WIRE CUTTING, and didn't even have to take apart the entire console... it was SWEET.

Anyway, now i have everything hooked up (except the ground in the trunk because i am playing with where it needs to be). When i switch the switch... nothing happens. I got power to the converter because the light is on... I got video signal passing through it because the navi is showing up crystal clear... when i unplug the video feed it goes away.

I plug in my gamecube to video 1... flip the switch... and nothing.

I have tried grounding the cable in the back to like 5 spots, and even ran a piece of metal wire (not really electrical wire... its more like wire to tie stuff down with) from the negative side of the battry to the ground wire in the trunk... still nothing. I don't get it.

Any ideas?

.... I just noticed that the directions say the switch is wired like this:

(Stolen from another thread)

But mine is wired with the black on top and red in the middle.... could the switch be backwards?

Well, if the box wasn't receiving power properly, you wouldn't even be seeing the navi signal, so its not that.

If you think its the switch, flip the wires on it, that you should be able to try in like 5 mins, tho its most likely not it.

Get a more simple video device such as a camera with a rca-out cable to test your vid source. That way you can rule out the gamecube or whatever else as the issue. Then unplug and re-plug all your connections to make sure you've got a good seat on it.

Good luck.

Thanks for the help, I will try something else as the video source, and test the connections.

What is supposed to happen if you flip the switch and their is no source? is it supposed to go to a black screen or does it just not change since their is no video source?

This would help me out with some of my troubleshooting.

Here is my power source right now....

I have come to the conclusion that something is wrong with the converter... I am going to call Kim on monday and ask if they will replace it.

I took a TV, some wire, and tools to the garage and COMPLETELY tested it. Every possible combination of settings and switches and still nothing.

I plugged the cube into a TV (while it was still running from within the car) and it worked fine.

I completely took apart all the installation that I did yesterday and opened the hood and hooked it directly to the battery. I ran a wire from the neg side of the battery back to the ground wire in the trunk. I hooked everything up and.... nothing. Not even a flicker. I tryed a million combinations of having the video source in both video 1 and video 2, having it set to RGBS and RGSB, flipping the switch both ways, hitting the brightness and resetting it.

Nothing caused even a flicker in the navigation. This to me means something is wrong with the device... UNLESS I am hooking up the PNP cable to the wrong port/location. There is only one spot on the back of the navi unit that it will even fit. I am hooking it to the back of the DVD box in the trunk that is for the navigation system.

The navigation system works perfectly with the converter hooked up. Too perfectly since its not showing my GC.

Has anyone ever had a bad converter before? Hopefully they will exchange it for me.

I highly doubt its the converter. If it would fail, it wouldn't be in the manner you're observing. The fact that the screen is so perfectly blank on the other side means the output isn't reaching the navi with the switch thrown. Obviously the unit works because you can view regular navi.

I'm sorry I can't give too much more help since you're PNP and I'm not familiar with that hookup. I hope someone local to you with electronics experience can help you perhaps at a meet soon.

How would I go about testing it using the backup camera input? Can you just put a switch on those wires or does it need power?

Maybe the switch is broken? I don't see what I could be doing wrong, i have tried so many combinations without any kind of result, it just seems impossible to have not accidently made it work.

Thanks! I did not ground the green wire, sounds like that could be the issue maybe. I will work on it tonight or tomorrow night, THANK YOU very much for your help!

I did plug the PNP into the back of the nav unit.

The green wire was the culprit. I am glad that was the issue, i was not looking forward to having to exchange it. I will be posting a DIY guide for noobs like me so that no one else makes themself look like an idiot. I was able to install the converter without cutting any wires, which i think a lot of people will like. Am I the first one to make this mistake?

Thank you VERY much dom for helping me out.
