do 6" subs still exist?
I'm looking for a good set of 6" subs to replace my sisters 6x9's. i only want woofers and not a coax speaker. these used to be quite common, but i never see any of them anymore. do these still exist? if not, how about some 6x9 woofers? she's not concerned about rear fill and does not have a room in the trunk. i think this would be the best option. any suggestions? if even this is not feasible.. how about some deep hitting 6x9's and i can just use the crossover on the amp to tune out the highs? thanks in advance.
i know focal makes some 6in woofers.. check out www.focal-america.com
supposedly the JL audio 6W0 is still in production.. i just can't find anywhere inside the US that sells it! JL won't respond to my emails either.. hmm..
drcookie, so what is the RM6? is that a midbass speaker?

Sorry, but I don't think there is anything called a "sub" woofer under 10 inches. If you're going to mount them in a free air configuration such as a rear deck, don't expect the bass to hit too hard.
I'd suggest to upgrade the 6x9's to an Infinity reference series or something similar.
To call a 6" driver a "sub" is a complete misnomer. It's not capable of hitting the deeper notes that a true "sub"woofer can.
We're now talking about the difference between being a woofer and being a subwoofer. It's not possible for a 6" driver to be a subwoofer.
What are your expectations of the frequency response of the driver? What kind of power will it receive?
I guess I'm asking what you expect from this driver. There is no such thing as a 6" subwoofer. Subwoofers start at 10". Woofers start at 6".
Did this make any sense at all?

of course i understand what you are saying. yes, 6" drivers will not be able to hit as low of a frequency as a 12" inch driver, but i'm not expecting to compete in SPL competitions either. this is for my sister, who has very modest expectations, so i am giving her a modest system to listen to. currently, i've got an a/d/s amp putting out 40wrms x 4 and will most likely upgrade to a larger 4 channel to simplify the install, rather than just adding a larger 2 channel amp.
anyway, i've heard 6x9's and even a 6.5" "subwoofer" in a stock SLK system and the sound isnt halfway bad. i think my sister would approve and so that is why i'm looking for something small enough to install in the rear deck without having to utilize any space in the trunk or require cutting. i think 6" drivers would be perfect.. whether or not it is appropriate to label them as "subwoofers" is not really my choice to say. apparently, Image Dynamics, JL Audio, and Rockford Fosgate, all of which are big name subwoofer manufacturers have or have had such products labeled so. my question was simply where to find them?

If you are installing in the rear deck, you probably need a free-air sub. 6" free-air sub is hard to come by.
I saw crutchfield.com has RF 6 3/4" subs but they are not for free-air. However, they have Kicker RMB6 and Kenwood KFC-W1705 which are for free-air but they are mib-bass subs. Not sure they would suit your need.
Hope this helps.
Cheers !!!

dr. cookie, i may be able to build a fiberglass type enclosure that could house the speakers, which shouldnt be much of a problem. my buddy says he's got a friend who can get RF gear for wholesale prices.. so i might see how these things sound
thanks for your input. on a side note: my friend has a 10W7 for $425 shipped if anyone is interested.
