Desparate for help w/TL cassette problem
I have a 2003 TL type S. My cassette problem is giving me grief. The main problem is that when I play a cassette adapter to listen to book tapes, it starts making a mechanical screeching sound after about 45 minutes of play. Regular cassette tapes don't seem to cause it, just the adapter. I don't even know where to go to find out what's wrong. I don't want to replace the entire audio system if I can help it. Don't want to have dealer send it off either if I can get away from that. Would prefer to keep OEM system.

TL Cassette Problem
Sorry, I left out the part that it is connected to a mp3 player. I download the books from audible.com. I have a long drive to work and enjoy listening to the books but they are accompanied by this screeching after 30-45 minutes now. I don't understand why it starts out ok. I've also tried several different adapters and that didn't solve the problem. Also tried to use a fm modulator and the sound was terrible since I live in a large metropolitan area.
i have a feeling it has to do with the adaptor mechansim, that tape. I remember back in the day when i used to hook up my portable CD-player to my headunit, it used to make some noise. My dad opened up the cassette adaptor and took some parts out i think.
Have you considered hardwiring your MP3 player?
