Question Deluxe Navi Kit

I haven't received my Deluxe Navi Video Kit yet but I had a question about installation. Does it have to be installed behind the actual navigation screen? Can the kit be wired somewhere else, like under the passanger seat tapped into the wiring harness there? My thinking is that instead of cutting, soldering, and tapping behind the screen would make it painfully obvious that there was modification if the navigation ever goes out and needs to be looked at by the dealer.
Could the wiring harness running along side the passanger door sill be tapped and then wires for the RF modulator and switch be ran up to the dash? I may just be jumping the gun since I don't actually know how the navi kit is supposed to be wired up but I'd like to start planning and figuring out how I am going to install it.

Excitedly waiting for his kit!

Maybe your question can be answered by Ron (StreetEffectz) as he's installed both 'original' and 'Deluxe models'. Or you can hear it from me, Dr. Frankenstein. After all I've created the monster ;}

The 4 wires needed for video are the same wire color in the 12-pin plug that connects to the under seat (or trunk mounted) navigation computer. You could intercept the video signal at that location if you wish. You will also need to tap into the power on the 8-pin plug. On this connector pins 1 and 2 are the same wire colors, but ground is found on pin 4, not pin 10 like my instructions state for behind the navi display 20-pin connector.

Mounting under the seat might mean the wires to the navi/video mode switch would be too short (if mounting switch in the dash). The Deluxe Video On My Navi has 40" of wire to the switch. This could be extended, but I don't supply the extra wire.

I'm sorry that my kits are being delivered a little later than expected, but I'm working on kits just about as fast as my decoders are being delivered. A few people will probably be doing installs this weekend (those that aren't snowed under!). Hope they chime in with how their installs went.

Sincerely,
Dr. FrankeinNavi

Does that mean you don't have to remove the dash and stuff to install it?

Can all the wire be tapped to the Navi unit connector in the trunk? ( rather to the display unit)

By the way Steve I'm going to get one from you, when my car is out of the hospital

The current instructions state for the unit to be mounted behind the dash. Those with 'original' units will most likely have to mount it there due to length of wire between the decoder box and the switch. (assuming they want the switch mounted in the dash).

I'll modify the Deluxe instructions for kits shipped as of today with the option to install Deluxe Video On My Navi behind the navi display unit OR in the trunk (under seat?) next to navi computer. I won't have any pictures of this install.

Good question,
Steve

Steve,

Got my kit today, thanks! To cut down on email volley, could you post the new instructions for installing the kit under the rear seat or in trunk? Thanks again.

Under the passenger seat or trunk install for the Deluxe Video On My Navi decoder has only 1 wire difference. The wire colors are exactly the same as your printed instructions, but on two separate connectors. The wires to 'T-tap' in for the decoder are on the 8 pin connector and the video signals are on the 12 pin. Reference table 3 of the printed instructions and tap into the wires from the 8 pin for decoder power. The Orange wire to the wire from pin 1, Red to the wire from pin 2 and the black wire to pin 4's black wire (not pin 10 as dash instructions state).

The video Red, White, Green and Yellow wires can all be found on the 12 pin connector attached to the navigation computer. Follow the printed directions for cutting these wires and inserting the switching relay. That's it, except for extending the parking brake wire or switch wires (if needed).
I'm still working on the printed instructions for this, but that should help you out right away.

If you have received the RF modulator with your Deluxe Video On My Navi kit the power wires are already connected to the decoder. If mounting the decoder in the trunk of the car these power wires will need to extended using extra wire (not provided). Or you could simply disconnect (cut) the RF modulator power wires from the decoder and wire as per the instructions for the RF modulator (using extra wire and switch provided with the RF modulator).

There is always a solution!
