DECODER AND NAVI playing VIDEO PICTURES!!!!
This is the DECODER with video input and ouput. The switch can be mounted on the dash to switch between video and the navi!
Three out of the 4 of these were taken with a flash:
Three out of the 4 of these were taken with a flash:
The response and demand has been great and I've received a lot of good feedback without even shipping a single unit! Several questions or requests came up repeatable, like how to mount the switch on the dash? How far away can it be from the decoder? Can I offer a different switch that matches the interior trim?
Answer: The chrome switch (shown in photo above with pre-production unit/wires) requires a 1/4" mounting hole. The cable length is 18" from the decoder to the switch. A few people wanted to mount the switch in the fog light switch location (cover) on left side of the TL dash. The supplied cable would then have been too short. To solve this problem I've redesigned the unit!
Announcing the "Deluxe Video On My Navi." kit. Just as easy to install with the same great picture quality, but with a corded black switch to change between navigation and video mode. The switch can still be dash mounted or placed in the fog light switch location (requires drilling cover, not dash). Using a simple 2 contact SPST switch allso allows you to change out to a different 'custom' switch, even a lighted one from Radio Shack or other source. Although, one black switch is provided that will fit nicely into the fog light cover already. The Deluxe Video On My Navi. kit will also be pre-wired for optional RF Modulator. The price for the Deluxe Video On My Navi. kit is $220 + shipping (Approx. $10).
People have also asked about "How to get stereo audio on the factory radio?". To solve this problem, I'm selling a RF Modulator that plays audio on a selectable FM station. The Video On My Navi. Deluxe kit is pre-wired to power an RF Modulator. This audio option is now available with your "Video On My Navi. Kit" for additional $70 (no extra shipping charged when purchased w/kit). RF Modulator's are also available from Ron (StreetEffectz), your best dealer for car stereo and A/V mobile products.
The Deluxe Video On MY Navi. kit will replace the 18" wired switched version after first $180 units are shipped later this week. Since no orders have shipped this week, I'm able to upgrade any existing order to the deluxe model when requested. Thanks to all who have ordered, I'm working hard on getting your units ready!
For those of you placing orders, the Deluxe model will be shipping end of February to first week of March. Payment is not due, until your unit ships. A limited number of Deluxe models will be made available sooner for those with order #'s wanting to upgrade.
Thanks,
Steve

Is that silver box the decoder? If so what are the measurements for it...I would need to hide it in the glove box or something. Also as far as audio for the playback..i was thinking of picking up a aline changer and a dvd/mp3/vcd player from autotoys and having the dvd player hook into the aux input for audio on the cd changer so I can have audio throughout the car and have the video display on the monitor.....has anyone delt with anything like this....autotoys has that all in one unit for around $300. I am sooooooooo excited!!! How much is this decoder going for? Do I have to cut any wires?
Yes, the silver box is the decoder. You can probably fit it behind the navigation display unit. I can provide you the exact measurements tonight, but you can see this is 1/2 the size of 8 1/2 X 11" sheet of paper (placed behind the decoder in this picture) and less than a 1" deep.
It's very easy to install. I'll include directions and all you need to do is match up the 4 wire colors and cut them about 1" back from the display unit. Crimp on the 8 new wire connectors (provided) and squeeze on the 3 wire taps (provided) for Power, ground and parking break. That's it for connections! Then just mount the switch (1/4" hole) on the dash to the left, right, top or bottom of the navigation display.
Installation Note: The switch needs to be within 1.5' of the decoder and the decoder within 1.5' of navigation display.
Please place your oder with me by sending a Private Message.

Ok Steve, it looks good, but I've got some questions I think everyone would like answered. You probably already know about the past failures in trying to make a converter, which resulted in a "fried" LCD screen. Which was aparently very costly to replace. How do you know your converter won't do that same? And how long have you had yours installed? Also, how many people have it installed?

Let's see if I can overcome the burn out screen issue people seem to be concerned about.
The RGB output of this decoder is .7v P-P with 75-Ohm load. This is an industry standards for RGB. Measuring the Honda/Acura navigation output on an oscilloscope it appears to be the same .7v P-P.
I'd sure like to know how this 'other guy' blew out his navigation screen. I'd bet he built his own decoder using TTL logic gates and overpowered the fluorescent (FL ILL+) backlight. My decoder is made by a major electronics manufacture and the electrical measurements match that of the navigation computer. In fact, I recommend adjusting the brightness via the navigation 'setup' menu, then flip the switch to video mode. You will find the brightness setting (Day, Night or Automatic) will still work in video mode. I don't intercept the FL ILL+ wire.
Burning out a screen would be a fairly serious issue.
I've had mine in operation for about two weeks now in different testing configurations. Frequently for several hours at a time. Only months of operation by multiple users will confirm that there are no hidden issues. To the best of my knowledge and abilities the electrical characteristics are within the acceptable range.
Now if you start living in your car, instead of your living room watching movies on your navigation screen it might just blow out from excessive use, but then again your living room TV might too!

I'm willing to work with any PS/2 owner to see if we can get DVD video and games on the navigation screen using the component video output of the PS/2. The unique function of the PS/2 is the ability to play DVD movies (and video games) with a razor sharp image.
I have the PS/2 connector already and I'm willing to make a special wire harness to test on the navigation display head unit. If it works, I could build a video/navigation switch (just like the navi. video kit) and RCA patch panel to mount under the dash. Or simply just provide instructions for the do it yourself PS/2 owners.
Oh boy another project!

Will this work for the 99 Lexus GS Nav system?
A. I'll include wiring instructions for 1999 and 2000/2001 Acura & Honda navigation display units. No plans to build for Lexus display unit, but if you have your Lexus electrical connector schematic, I could tell if it would probably work or not.
How much for the box? $180 + $10 Shipping
Where to purchase? Send email to SteveStMS@aol.com
Is there a switch to switch from Nav to Video source? Yes, my kit includes a wired switch and all connectors to change between navigation and video.
Thanks for asking,
Steve

Only 1 NTSC composite video input, 1 NTSC composite video output (video loop from input) and 1 RGB output that is shared with your Navi. screen.
For a multiple source switching you could use anything from a cheap Radio Shack A/B switcher to stuff made by Clarion, Pioneer or Alpine.
The second shipment won't be until 1st week of March. I have a 2 week vacation coming up (although I'll probably be putting cables together then too!).
And now some bad news. I might also have to rethink the price on second shipment, sorry. My supply of decoders is limited and the project has turned out to be a little more labor intensive than originally thought. I'm not out to make a lot of money with these unit's (although several people told me I should). For those of you on the first order (and have order #'s) don't worry-I'll honor the original price.
Thanks,
Steve

Is there a model for the switcher for more than one input source? Say DVD, Video game console, etc... Or will this current setup support multiple inputs.

non-navi. to navi?
Answer:
If you want the factory navigation system wouldn't this be a service center or dealer option? Kind of like a factory CD changer!
The car manufactures I'm aware of like Honda, Acura and Lexus don't offer this because it requires a new dash assembly (with display unit), GPS receiver to be mounted and a connection to your speedometer. It's more than just putting a navi. computer in your trunk or under the seat!
With an expert installer you could get your car's navi. dash from your service center and fit a aftermarket navi. display (like Alpine or others) into the opening.
Food for thought. Don't count on me to do this project.

Checked email! Thanks.
I will put a FAQ together in the next day or two to answer all your questions for "Video On My Navi." kit. Yes, that will be the products official name. Do you like it? I'll also announce the new price(s) for those who haven't ordered (don't have order #) and hopefully a audio option.
I'm very sensitive about increasing the price, because so many people want a "Video On My Navi." kit. However, I can't break even when adding up all the materials and time building. The kits are very professional with shielded wire, shrink tube and tie wraps. Maybe StreetEffectz can post the picture I sent him of a completed kit.
*** 1/28 Update ***
Those with order numbers can expect an email from me this week with further information and instructions for payment. First set of Video On My Navi. kits will go out shortly after payment.

Steve

Thanks to StreetEffectz for posting these pics for me. Make sure to talk to him for all your car audio and mobile entertainment equipment needs, such as that in-dash DVD player you will now be getting to play movies on your Navigation display!
A couple people have asked me what I'm using for DVD playback. Well, I started with a portable DVD player in the car, but the batteries went dead once too often and it was difficult to start/stop the video every time getting in or out of the car. Not to mention the security issue of leaving a portable DVD player on the front seat. So I decided on the replacing the Honda factory radio with a Panasonic CQ-DVR909U in-dash DVD player/stereo that also plays DVD-Audio. For those of you who haven't heard DVD-A is a new 5.1 format with high sampling 96KHz rate and also provides video pictures with lyrics. The sound quality is simply amazing! I didn't think I would notice it in the car, but now I want all my music in DVD-A format. It also looks great on the navi. screen too! The Panasonic unit has just about everything, except a screen and with my new navi. video kit you can now use that!. Panasonic CQ-DVR909U has a center channel speaker and Dolby Digital/DTS decoder, adding a CD-Changer you can also have dual-zone (rear seat listening to different audio/video sources) capability. See www.panasonic.com/consumer_electronics/caraudio/mobile.htm for more information. Panasonic has also announced, but not released the less expensive ($799) DVD player/stereo CX-DV700. Scheduled for a February release, but at the early January CES show they displayed 1 of 3 working (alpha) models. It wouldn't even eject the DVD. So, I doubt they will make that date. This model won't play DVD-A or have Dolby Digital and DTS decoders, but the price is right.
There are other manufactures doing in-dash DVD player/stereo's - most with built-in LCD displays starting +$1500. Ask StreetEffectZ.
For those who have asked about my list of equipment and stereo modifications.
+ Panasonic CQ-DVR909U
+ Navi. mute and voice prompts on stereo
+ Navi. video kit - a must have!
+ Pioneer CD-CM1 cell phone mute+delay timer.
+ Clarion TTX-7101 AV/Switcher, TV tuner
+ Clarion OHM-641 6.5" rear flip down display
+ Alpine 4" 2-way rear speakers
+ Bazooka RSA-6HP sub-woofer (space issue)
+ Bazooka volume and x-over switch w/down-mix switch added (custom modification).

Just wanted to be clear... the additional $70 includes the RF modulator, or does that just includes the pre-wiring for it? Also, do you, are anyone else, have pictures of what the resolution looks like using and HI-FI VCR source instead of a DVD....I know low-tech, but what can you do when you're living on fixed income.

Yes, the $70 more includes the RF modulator, but all Deluxe Video On My Navi kits will be pre-wired so that when you switch to video mode it turns the RF modulator on too.
I'll try to put up a couple VCR and TV images up. It still looks good! In fact, it fills the full screen.

Steve,
What about TV signals? Can your decoder currently, or in the future, work with television tuners. Maybe it's time for the Super Deluxe Navi. Kit that combine TV, DVD/VCR/Video Games and stereo audio through the existing system.
I'm sure most people would be willing to pay the extra cost to be able to watch TV...especially on long trips when you can't possibly bring enough of "we already saw that before" tapes or DVDs.

Getting NTSC composite video, the most common consumer electronic video signal on the navigation screen is all most people will really ever need. TV tuners, VCR/VCP, DVD players for car (or home) have this signal.
If you want multiple sources, like TV tuner, DVD, VCR/VCP then you probably want to get some sort of A/V switcher. Clarion makes several, including one with a TV tuner and RF modulator (TTX7101 or new model TTX7601). They even have a stand alone TV tuner model - the TTX001. TV reception in the car has been and probably always will be a problem. So I say why stop at TV -- Go for a Satalite System -- the perfect compliment for your "Video On My Navi"!! (See http://www.kvh.com for information). Put that on top of your TL and smoke the tires.
All in good fun,
Steve

If I were to go with the Hi-Fi VCR with the built-in TV tuner, would I still need the RF modulator. Seems, the audio out from the unit could be routed through the existing headunit? Checkout these specs.

You would still need an RF modulator, becuase the VCP/TV audio output will NOT plug into the factory stereo.
The Deluxe Video On My Navi when purchased with the RF modulator will come with a red, white and yellow RCA patch cable that will plug directly into this VCP/TV.

Fellow TL NAV Owners:
I like to personally thank Steve for doing what most of us hoped and wished we could do, but didn't know how. Mad props to "da man" for making our "upscale Accord" even more unique. Steve, we owe you!!

Non navi to navi is not possible because I'd lose all climate control buttons... unless I get the stock navi unit to control these... but then it isn't cost effective, probably smacking me with $2000-$4000...
Thank you for your compliments. I'll be happy to hear feedback from those having installed the first non-deluxe versions. Make sure to share a few digital pics!
To those who have the deluxe version on order, I've decided to include a lighted rocker switch (Radio Shack part #275-712). The lighted switch is ON when the Navi switch is set to video mode. If you don't wish the switch to light, simply disconnect a wire plugged into the switch. Your also welcome to use your own SPST switch.

If you have a CL you could tap into the amp and not need a RF modulator. I am not sure how the audio is setup in the TL.
