Custom Fiberglass Enclosures...?

i plan to get one 12" type r sub, and im trying to think of the best ways to save space. now ive seen people that make custom fiberglass enclosures in the spare tire and then cover it with a false floor. ive asked around to see how difficult it would be to make a custom box to fit snugle in the corner, but ive been told repeatedly that it is very hard to make a custom box as they had to be airtight and a certain size. so, im wondering if it is possible to do this kind of install, and how possible it would be to actually 'do it yourself'. im thinking sound advice or some other car audio install place could do it, but that would be mad $$$. if anyone has any knowledge on this subject please share. this would be the perfect solution to my one sub space saving set up... thanx

your first diy fiberglass box isn't going to be particularily amazing, and you'd be surprised at how much you'll have to spend on the materials to make it look professional. it can be done, mind you, if you can park your car for a week or two just to work on the box. there are a lot of sites out there that provide how-to's for making a fg sub box. just google 'fiberglass subwoofer box.' corner boxes are harder to make than spare tire well boxes simply because of gravity. you have to go into using chicken wire and all sorts of crazy shiz. if you check around, tho, i'm sure you can find a shop that will make a nice stealth box/amp rack for pretty cheap. i got a $250 quote for a sweet stealth setup.

If you look in the 'other' TSX site under sale adds 'Blake's TSX' has 2 12" custom boxes for sale. They fit in the trunk on the sides.

yeah, ive done some searching, and the one thing i dont understand is that would i have to just put the resin(?) against the tinfoil or whatever i use to cover the car to shape the enclosure? also what is MDF? i dont now, it seems like this may be a bit too complicated unless i had step-by-step-by-step pictures and instructions. i dont mind using a box, i just want to try to keep it as clean and space efficient as possible...

nice, what did you order?? how do you deal with the size that the box needs to be? thats the thing that really confuses me, cause ive seen pictures of people building custom boxes of all different sizes, and i thought that it had to a certain size according to the type of sub you use. oh well, let me know how it goes and take LOTS of pics!!!

i got some stuff that you prolly never heard of hehehe.....

i got the:

-UsAamp 5600x
-Seas 6.5 woofers
-Lpg 25nfa tweeters
-Creative sx10 inch subs
-5 gallon of liquid deadner
-amp installation kit and 100 ft of 16gauge speaker cables

I havent decided on the specs for the box yet as I've been busy with school, but Ill take lots of pics.

You might want to get a shop to fab you box, it doesnt need to be fiberglass, its really a prefernce thing. If the box is built correctly it will sound good.

this is true, i guess it doesnt have to be fiberglass. but i really want it in my spare tire well, cause really that is the perfect spot; no loss of trunk space and it is a clean great looking setup. but could they make it out of wood? cause then they lose airspace right... i dnot know, i have to go to my sound advice to get some quotes on it. cant wait to see your setup!

It depends on how they build the box. Im putting mine on the side, dont really want to lose the spare tire as i think its safe to have a spare. anyhow, i cant wait to install it either, but man it is costly!

when making a free-forming box, most people use a layer of tinfoil or masking tape (much better, imho) to protect the space around the glassing area and to keep resin from sticking to the car itself. then you lay fleece OR fiberglass mat down into the spare tire well and resin it. do two layers of mat, then take the mold out of the box and add 5 or so more layers of fleece or mat to the inside. to make the top of the box, you can cut a piece of mdf (medium density fiberboard. it's heavy stuff.) and attach it to the top of your fiberglass "bowl" with epoxy and screws then add a couple layers of resin over the whole thing. cut your speaker holes and you're done. another way to do the top is to cut your speaker rings first and then fleece around them... that gets hella complicated tho. check this site out if you're interested, tho: http://web.njit.edu/%7Ecas1383/glassing2/

adding a sub will prolly rattle. just get some dynamat, second skin, rammat, or some liquid deadner and just deaden the whole trunk and doors. it will kill all rattles and improve the sound.

i was talking more specifically about a fiberglass enclosure. but that liquid deadener, does it really work? or would i be better off getting dynamat... its just so expensive. well, until i hear the rattles i guess ill just wait on it

it all works. i got 5 gallon for 200 and thats enough and them some for the ENTIRE car. liquid is easier to use and its a must have. just do it right the first time, i dont think you would want to rip open your car again.
