computer system in car??
computer system in car??
I tried doing a search but didnt see too much. I have been curious about putting a computer in my car for mp3s, dvds, games...etc. HAs anyone seen or done this?? I would like to use a touchscreen to avoid having a mouse. Is this even possible?? Thanks for any input.
I'm currently in process of putting a PC in mine. Still need to get a desent 12V power supply (they're pretty pricey for what they do). As far as the screen, I'm considering using the indash monitor, still experimenting w/ various RGB signals. But I figure since the screen uses what it seems to be an analaog RGBS and the VGA port spits out an analog RGBHV this should definitly be doable. The touchscreen, you won't be able to use the stock one as the touch-screen technology used is proprietary. You may hawover be able to put a touch screen overlay on top, not sure how that would work. Another option is to replace the HU w/ a 7" wide touchscreen, but those are also way pricey (at least $500 for vga alone + whatever it takes to make that a touch screen, it's a non-standard size for touchscreen overlays). I do think that if you can't get a touchscreen, a touchpad would fit nicely into the cupholder...
Austin, are you using any sort of shutdown controller? What OS are you running?

well, even though the touchscreen is proprietary you COULD hack it. The only problem is there are only 60 touch points on the screen defined by 10 IR emitters on the top and 6 on the side.

Anything can be hacked, the question is it worth it... 60 touch points, I can live w/ that, as long as I build an interface similar to what the nav interface looks like...
Do you know what is sent across on the two data wires? From what I understand, one goes from screen to ecu the other from ecu to screen.

Can't say too terribly much now
. But I am running Qnx.

Personally that's not enough touch points for me...and though you can hack it you would have to build the board to do that to interface with your serial port, including the (I assume) step ups...then you'd have to write the software to control it. There are better methods.

Austin, I am not using the touch screen interface on the navi - 60 touch points is nowhere close to what I would like.

Sorry...didn't mean that to sound like I thought you were. I know you're not. I'm agreeing with you.

Pretty unimpressive
. He's using a regular laptop, and an X10 transmitter (ew). If he gets his car within 100 yards or anything that puts out a 1+ghz signal he gets fuzz on his video. I hate X10. And the picture is horrible. And he's using a power inverter....
