My component setup included a 6 1/2 inch speaker plus a seperate 1in tweeter which was installed just above the two front doors(this is in my 4 runner, not my tl). My system sounds much better with the seperate 1 in tweeter. I know this because the seperate tweeters stopped working for awhile(p.s. dont get your stuff installed at soundtrack, not only did they wire it wrong, but they put a gash in my roof with a razor blade!! ) and you could definitely tell the difference. In the back, i have fullrange speakers with a tweeter which sticks out from the middle of the speaker. These dont even compare to the speakers in the front of my car. The treble is there, but no mids or lows.

Just my .02 there may be a company out there that makes some bad a$$ fullrange speakers, but i havent heard of any yet

Not very scientific but the general jist.

Components have a crossover which will help the efficiency of the speaker where coaxial dont.
If you look at sound waves. lower frequency sounds will require more cone movement with
longer waves, where high end sounds are a very quick short movement/waves. If your 6.5
inch speaker is full range, then it will try to produce both high and low frequencies at the
same time. So your speaker never gets the full movement needed to produce low frequencies
and gets too much movements to produce accurate high frequencies.

An exaggeration would be to watch some thumping 12" subs and see how much the cone
moves to produce those low frequencies. Now imagine at the exact same time you get a
bass hit you have to produce a sound of a triangle. A frequency that requires almost no
movement from the woofer whatsoever.
