Components pro - locate the speaker in a better position for sound. (i.e. - tweeter, being more directional, facing you and higher. Woofer, being less directional can be mounted lower, near your feet). Also, crossovers are higher quality and frequently have multiple/selectable crossover frequency choices.

Coax pro - easier install

If you replace the front door speakers in a TSX with coaxials, only the woofer will be used because of the factory amp's crossover, correct? Are the factory tweeters a good match for something like the Alpine Type S coaxials?

I think I'm in the same boat as the original poster, debating on whether to use components or coaxials up front.

I thought the front door speakers were full-range (except perhaps for a sub-bass filter). This is probably in the FAQ...

i should have mentioned that i am running aftermarket amps already. i also have aftermarket mb quart components installed. i am not sure though that after having this setup for quite some time is whether i really care for having the tweeters mounted so high up. JL Audio makes some pretty high end co-axials that i am thinking about trying.

^^ The tweeter placement in the TSX isn't ideal. The highs really bounce off the windshield and can add harshness to the sound. If you have a metal tweeter that has a propensity for harsh highs this placement only makes it worse. However, if you don't use the stock tweeter location and instead go for coaxials in the doors then the sound stage will be lower, somewhere at your feet. A good tweeter that can extend its frequency response into lower frequencies (and a crossover that will enable that) will have the effect of raising the sound stage to directly in front of you.

dont higher quality coaxials have adjustable tweeters so that you can aim them up towards you to raise the sound stage?

They very well may have that. Some tweeters aren't very good at off axis listening. The adjustable tweeter will swivel a bit so that you can point it towards the listener instead of it being pointed at below your knees. However, the sound will still come at you from below, instead of from the dashboard.
