Components
I've tried just about everything you can imagine: Diamond, Alpine Type X & Type R, Pioneer Rev Series, MB Quart QSD and PCE series, Phoenix Gold, Memphis SQ series, Boston Pro, and so on. Depending on the power you are going to throw at them, so far the ones that i have liked the best as far as having great midbass and an aggressive, yet not harsh or bright tweeter have been the orion p6 components. Word to the wise though, be prepared to do a fair amount of work if you are installing these yourself. the woofer and the crossover are huge.
There are a lot of really good brands. The "best brand" is probably a tough question. Peoples tastes are different and what one person may love, anther may hate and vice versa. It would be best to listen for yourself. If you can not do that, go with a top brand name that fits your budget, have it properly installed and it should fit the bill nicely.
For what it is worth, to my ears, I love my Diamond Audio M661 and I have not heard anything I like better.

I read that thread and I am considering going with the Diamond m661, is the install a DYI? What about gettin the tweeter in and are there any fitment problems? Thanks for your help

M661's go in easily--both mids and tweeters (into 2001 TL). Use 3/4" spacer for mids. Crossovers are the difficult part. I took mine out of the boxes and mounted them right to the door in the one place they would fit. The other option is running two sets of wires and hiding the crossovers somewhere else.
The DA instructions say to test tweeter placement before cutting. I didn't do that and ended up having to switch to silk tweeters because the metal domes were too bright for me where I mounted them. I'd take their advice and tape the tweets to the door and listen to it for a day or two before mounting the tweeters..

I traced circles on the inside vinyl, then cut the vinyl with a razor knife. Then I drilled holes around the inside of the circle through the plastic, and cut that out with sidecutters. From there I used the knife to carefully trim the hole to be perfectly round.
Easier would have been a hole saw for a drill, but I didn't have one the right size, and it would have taken longer to go buy one than to just do it the manual way.
But, remember what I said about tweeter placement. The best place seems to be the top front of the doors forward of the release levers.
If you're going DA I'd go up to the Hex (S) series and get the silk tweeters.

I wasn't very clear on my last post: When I said "remember what I said about tweeter placement" I meant that you should test it for what sounds best. Then I went on to say that the best place was forward/high--I meant that's the EASIEST place, not necessarily the best-sounding place. Sorry.
One of the reasons I chose Diamond was the shallow mounting depth. You'd need to double-check, but I think the Hex series 6.5" comps also have the same 2.125" depth.
As for the difference, I haven't heard the Hex's, so I couldn't say. I do know now that I prefer soft-dome tweeters to metal-dome, and that the Hex's can be purchased in either variation.
I'd go to a couple of stereo shops and see what sounds best to you before making your final decision.

With that in mind though, I have ordered the Alpine Type-X set to try them out. Hope I wont be disappointed.

I think the Hex series cost around 50% more than the M series. I don't care for metal dome tweeters, so I would go for the Hex series. (You can buy the hex series with either metal or silk--go for the silk unless you don't play it very loud).
The metal domes have an absolutely INCREDIBLE detail, but are quite harsh at high volumes. Diamond was kind enough to send me some silk replacements, and I'm very happy with them. While not as detailed, they're kinder on the ears at high volumes inside a car.

On a serious note, I went with the CDT HD63s. They are amazing. Low wattage requirements and they pound the midrange.
