Comparing Subs...

Hey, I'm planning on buying a sub very shortly and i have been reading a lot about them. I have narrowed it down to a few...

JL Audio 12W3V2
Alpine Type-R 12"
Infiniti Kappa Perfect 12.1

What would you guys pick out of those three....which one will give me the best SQ and pound the hardest? Or even if you think there is another sub that excells above those, in the same price range....tell me bout it. Thx

what type of music do you listen to.. is your space limited.. what amp will you be using.. a little more info would help people better decide what they think the best choice is for you... my suggestion go to the local deal and listen, listen, listen... find the one that fits your taste..

I haven't bought an amp yet, but most likely i would ge with a JL audio 500/1, because i am also sort of leaning towards the JL subs. I listen to maily rap, my space is not limited at all either. I think i may have narrowed it down more to either Two 12W3V2 or one 12W6V2, with the JL audio 500/1, they will both cost me around the same price. Which setup would be a better choice, or are the type-r's, or perfects a better choice. Thx a lot

I think going with all JL would be a great choice. As for one 12W6v2 or (2) 12W3v2, that is a toss up. You will have 500 watts so, you will either send 500 watts to one sub or 250 watts to each of the two subs. The two subs will have more cone area so should produce what sounds like more bass but, they should be about the same volume as the one sub. If room is not an issue, I would go with two subs. If you want to save some space, go with the one. Either way, I think you will be happy.

Hmmm, thx a lot guys, I'm still sitting on the fence with the issue, because i am planning on having this sub for a little while, and if i ever get a new car that is tight on space, i might want to stick with the w6v2. How much better would the sq on the w6v2 be? and would it be ok if i was sending 500 watts at it, because it is really only rated at 400watts.

Shawhite has one so he could tell you how they sound. And the 500/1 would be a perfect fit for that sub. Again, Shawhite has that exact setup so, I will let him tell you on that.

if you are not worried aobut space i would say go with 2 12w3v2... my friend has 2 12w3s in a sealed box and his hits alot harder than mine... of course i only have one 12w6v2 in a sealed box... plan on building a ported box this weekend or next.. but i am pleased with the overall performance of my jl 12w6v2...

Hmmm, I will probably end up getting the 2 12W3V2, but i have one last question. After looking at the prices of the amps, a JL 500/1 is pretty expensive, is there a big difference if i went with a rockford amp around 500 watts? Is there any difference in sq or spl? thx

sq difference for sure... spl probably not... the jl amp is going to alot clearer but what does it matter.. you are using it with subs (low freqs) sq is not that big of an issue...

2 12w3v2s will hit about as hard as a 12w7 with half the power.. which means you dont have to spend twice the money on a bigger amp...

i'm leaning towards 12w3v2 also...seems like a nice set for low to medium powered system.. i have a pioneer amp for the subs rated at 175 x 2 @4ohm. i didn't wanna spend too much so i bought 2 12" infinity reference subs. and it sux... it really sux @ss. i should of bought JL in the first place. also those infinity requires 1.25 qf box...but i have them in 1.00 qf box.

In terms of sonic characteristics, there are no SQ difference between the Rockford amp and the JL amp. What you perceive in sound quality is the output. To many people, even those above the average joe, the louder the volume, the better it sounds to them. But thats nature since not all amps put out the same amount of power. One amp's xover will have a steeper ovtave slope, the other will have less noise, etc. Pick any amp. As long as it has sufficient power, it's reliable, and the price is right, go for it.

How much are you getting the 12w6v2 for? If you want a tad more output, get a 12w7, if the price is right, and put that bad boy in a 3.0 cubic feet ported box tuned to 28-32hz. It'll be one of the hardest hitting subs you'll ever experience.

JL audio makes good boxes, but they could probably use a lower tuning frequency. My guess is that they aimed for the average consumer where people like boomy bass while the minority likes accurate reproduction of music. I believe the JL H.O boxes are tuned to around 40hz or so.

You can build a box that will work well with their subs, while spending much less. If you can't build boxes and just looking for something for your subwoofer to sit in, the H.O box is good enough.

I'll have to check with manville on the exact tuning freq though, but i'm pretty sure its up near the 40hz.
