changing to aftermarket deck in tl

i was wondering does anyone know if we have to change all our speakers out if we decide to change out the bose deck. A guy at circuit city told meeh that if a get a aftermarket dect that i would have to get all new speakers because the bose will not work with any other deck besides bose>

no, you dont have to change your speakers, but you will need an adapter....the thing is, bose speakers have an amp built into every speaker, so you will need to turn them down

you will not need an adapter, and the amp isn't on the speakers. The bose system in the tl (atleast as Ihave seen on the 99-00 TL's) have a stand alone amp running a 4 ohm load to the speakers. If you put in an aftermarket deck you will need only the standard 98+ honda accord harness and the Metra 99-7868 dash kit. You will lose the use of your stock subwoofer though.

if you are refering to the sub, yeha it is garbage, but then again the whole system is. as for the interior speakers, they aren't exactly great but with a decent head unit and the lack of the factory EQ limiting the speakers it sounds fairly decent for a factory set of interior speakers.

I agree with Scott. I first just changed the head unit and it did make a noticable difference. Not huge but, noticable. I am not sure if you would even notice that the factory "sub" is not working.

Was there an option in 99 for a premium sound system that included tweeters or was teh sound the same for all options? I'd like to add some components to my front and rear doors, but don't like the tweeters just hanging out. I like the sleeper look.

BTW, my first post (just got my 99 TL (non-Navi) on Sat, been reading since then)!

Get Mb-Quarts, you can mount the tweet in front of the mid like a coaxial.

what about aftermarket deck and aftermarket sub but stock speakers? What would you need to do that?

You would need the aftermarket deck, a Metra install kit, unless you want a custom install, a sub and an amp for the sub. Plus of course, all the wiring that would be involved. It can be done without much trouble. I would seriously consider changing the stock speakers, if you are going to all the trouble of changing the head and adding an amp and sub.

this is what i have done to tithe me over until I can afford the time and money to buy and install the amp and interior speakers. It sounds half decent and the aftermarket sub helps to alleviate some of the strain on my interior speakers (by allowing my to focus all bass through it and plass a HPF on the factory interior speakers). It is only temporary though. The factory speakers are still a paper cone and by attaching them to the aftermarket H/U i know I am living on borrowed time with them. but if you need it to bridge the time it would take to go about changingover then it is a worthwhile venture.

Can I install Infinity Kappa 63.Is for all four speakers without replacing the HU and amp and still get superior quality to the Bose? I'm not looking for louder, just clearer.

I think i remember reading somewhere on here that the bose system operates on a four ohm load, which as far as I know means you would be able to put in speakers without an amp bypass. I don't know any of this for sure since I haven't tested to resistance of the factory speakers myself, nor have I tried doing a straight swap like that. Knowing bLose though, it's a relatively safe bet that it won't work without a bypass. . .

what exactly is a bypass- and also, do I have to worry about Bose's EQ settings making the quality of my new speakers off?

basically a bypass of the amp would allow you to essentially reset the resistance to four ohms (its actually a little more detailed than that depending on the head unit used and what not), but in this case i believe it is irrelevant to go into that much detail. as far as the factory eq goes, i forgot about that. It is built into the factory radio and i think you would have to do something akin to the DX6 project to bypass it so that you could fully utilze the full potential of the new speakers...

Are the bypass and mods to the Bose EQ settings complicated and if so, could I just trust Cartoys or another shop to install the speakers and make the necessary adjustments?

it's fairly difficult if you aren't reletively electrically inclined (meaning myself being an installer, i'm not sure i would risk trying it on my own speakers). Honestly I would be skeptikal about letting an independant shop try shuch a thing, but that is based on the thought that most of the installers in memphis, while being great installers, have proven to be slightly below par electricians at best (myself included).

What would be your best suggestion for me then as far as upgrading my speakers? I am not an electrical know-it-all by any means, and am probably not even a novice... I don't want to be stuck with Blose any longer than I have to but I want the upgrade to be worth it and sound better and clearer- though I prefer not to have to buy a bunch of extra equipment like a new amp, etc although I am not sure what to do about the Bose sound EQ....
