Can I wire 3 JL 12w6's into 1 amp?

I finally made up my mind and I want to get 3 JL 12W6's. I want to run all 3 off of my RF 1100A2. Now the thing is that these subs have 6 ohm DVC coils. Is there a way to wire them so that my amp is at 2 ohms? I dont want to spend money on a new amp too.

Yeah, just what he posted...in fact I've done that before on a few installs...I'm going to have 3 12w6's in my car too I already have two...and am hunting for another. Hey listen, hope you haven't bought them, because I can get us pretty d@mn good prices if we buy 4 (your three my one). If you're interested PM me, if you haven't bought them already.

Something about the setup though, you have an 1100a2 that's going to power 3 JL 12 w6's. These subs are my forte and I can tell you, they're 300 watts apiece. Now if you wire them in a 4 ohm configuration, which is what you'll do when you short one voice coil of each and wire the others in parallel...you're looking at a 4 ohm load to the amp. Each of the subs still want 300 Watts RMS, and believe me they're underrated (how do I know? I run an 800a2 power, rated at 1000 watts, through them at 90% and they still could use about 100 watts apiece more). I know you don't want to hear this because you don't want to buy another amp...but let's assume your amp is rated at 1200 watts...which it probably is. Then you have 600 watts/channel at 2 ohms, which is 300 watts/channel at 4, or 600 watts bridged at 4 ohms. Now I can definitely tell you that 200 watts to each sub will not cut it for 12 w6's. If you're not looking to really get anything out of them near what they could do OK...and they'll sound great...but 200 watts apiece isn't much. Assume also you'll only run your amp at 90% max so you now have 180 watts to each sub...which is really low, 3/5 of what RMS is...

I know, you don't want to change your amp out I understand that...just food for thought. But really, if you haven't bought your subs PM me and I'll get us a good deal.

96TL- There is no way to set up your 12w6's in a 2ohm load. Look at the JL Audio tutorial. You can get a 4ohm , and 1 ohm load. I would stick with the 4 ohm load with your amp anyways. You will still be getting what about 1000watts to your subs? Can't remember what your amp is rated at but 1000 watts for three subs is still 333 a piece. Should pound like crazy!

Dude 2 ohm bridged= 1ohm stereo load. Too much for your amp. Also there is no way to wire 12w6's in a 2 ohm load. Sorry. Why don't you just stick to a 4 ohm bridged? That is the most power you will get out of your amp.

or sell you amp and get something stable to 1ohm. A class D amp of some sort, DEI 1100D's can be had at very good prices off of EBay...

Hmmm, I dont know what to do. I guess I'll wire them 4 ohm bridged like you said and see how they sound. These subs are good right? The foam ring looks a little wimpy...

Ah d@mn so you already bought the 12 w6's eh? Ah well...if I read it wrong and you haven't bought them yet then PM me ASAP before I buy mine. No 1 ohm for an RF amp is suicide. If I were you I'd sell it and get something else...because you can get good prices for that amp as it's very powerful and an old body design that has been discontinued for a new, ugly design. As I said...that may be PLENTY of power for you...you'll have to hook it up and listen, but your 12 w6's can go MUCH louder, so if it's not then upgrade the amp.

this may be your best bet. Try it first and worry about selling it later (if you are unhappy with the set-up). I may be able to get you a good price on JL's, in Canadian $$ too A friend of mine is the manager at A&B Sound. His JL prices are pretty good (I get 10% above cost). Let me know if you would like me to check for you...

No, I didn't buy them yet but I've seen them before and the foam surround looks like it doesn't last. I should be getting them soon. I was supposed to go today with my friend but he had to go somewhere with his girl. I really don't like the foam surround but ALOT of people tell me these subs rock and sound very good. I was gonna go with Boston Pro Series 12's first but changed my mind. Where are the new JL W7's anyway? I want to see how much they go for but I can't find them anywhere online...

Well would you be interested in buying them with me? Don't worry...the surrounds are fine...and these are arguably the best subs out there. I got to see the w7's at a show...and well they're out in small quantities, but they're expensive...$500-$1000. For now you'd do better with the 12w6's...

OK, well I have to see my friend tomorrow (checking prices on a digital camera...) I will get you guys some prices and post them tomorrow night.

The foam surrounds will be fine. Just try to keep them out of direct sunlight/liquids. Even those should not bother them but since you are so worried...

In MY opinion, there are better subs out there for SPL/SQ now a days... but no one can tell YOU which ones sound the best. Have you listened to the JL's or are you going by what everyone else says. Audio is VERY VERY subjective, what sound good to me may sound like ass to someone else...

Truthfully, I have never heard JLs before. I am buying them strictly from what I've been told from ALOT of people. Everyone raves about them. I've also been told the dust caps pop off alot though. Also, I really like the fact that they are 6 ohm DVC. I really want 3 subs and I want to use 1 amp. There aren't too many subs that will let me do this. I know a shop that has 3 12" Round Kicker Solo Barics which are 8 ohm SVC and sound great. I could wire 3 of those to get a 2.66 ohm load which is good for my amp. The only thing is that if one of them blows, I'm screwed because they're discontinued.

And there's a reason too...that reason being that the solobarics have had horrendous stories about bad workmanship...I heard they don't hold up too well...

And what do you mean when you say you've heard about the dust cap popping off??? Huh? JL?

Really? Solo Barics arent made well? I guess there goes that idea. Yes, I've been told the dust caps pop off alot on JLs. Like I said though, I have no personal experience with JL so I dont know if its true or not.

I don't even think it's possible for the dust cap to pop off I mean...the dust cap is just the round cap looking thing in the center of the subwoofer positioned over the spider to keep foreign material from entering the structure of the subwoofer and possibly damaging it or interfering with the magnetic forces. Since the entire cone setup is one solid piece...I don't see how that's possible. Maybe I misunderstood. But I will tell you that JL subs are some of the best workmanship you'll find out there...JL and Infinity...

OK. So I guess its just a rumor. Good. Anyway, I get the subs from a shop in Manhattan. Bottom line, the more you spend, the better the discount.

Sounds like where I get mine 96TL. Well hey I'm still looking for those two sets of JL XR653CS and the other JL 12 w6...so if they'd drop the price down then I'd be interested in buying with you...and I assume its no skin off your back seeing as they'd charge you less. Let me know,
