Building a Box

I have 2 JL 10w3v2 subs and I need a box for them.

I have a 500/1 JL amp for them and I wanna build a box.

I have the specs and everything, I also have a Dremel.

What do I need besides a Nail Gun, MDF, WoodGlue and carpet?

I you're asking these question..... you shouldn't be doing it.

But now you got me curious. What if I used a Dremel instead of a table saw to cut the wood. Hmmm.....

That should be all you need then, as long as you have the specs and air space requirements, you just need to cut wood to shape, nail it, seal it, and carpet.

My friend on the boards says to get a pre built box from a Flea Market.

Id rather not do that though.

How much should I expect to pay for a place to make one for me.

Go to home depot with your straight cuts (they will cut the wood for you)....and buy a $20 4'x8' piece of 3/4" MDF.....some 1.5" wood screws and put it together with some wood glue. Get the hole diameters off of JL's website and use a jigsaw to cut 2 holes. It should take about 2 hours from start to finish!

I love when customers try to tell me how easy my job is.

I'm not a customer and I'm not trying to tell you your job is easy....I just know that its not that hard it you are inclined to get your hands a little dirty. You're telling me you don't think to yourself "man...I just made a simple sealed box and it cost me $25...and I got $175 from a customer to build it!"? If you're talking fiberglass and/or plexiglass...thats a different story.

What about the thousands of dollars in tools? And the years of training, school and experience?

There is a huge GAP between somebody that has "built a box before" and somebody that builds boxes for a living. Either wood or fiberglass. The finished product of an EXPERIENCED PROFESSIONAL is worth far more. As well, the advice of that PROFESSIONAL is very valuable and should be respected.

Thank you again for reminding me why I charge so much.

Couldn't have said it better!!

hell.. I got subthump's quote for a single 10" .. $85 + $10 shipping.. and they're probably one of the best for sub enclosures!!

cost of tools, school ? LOL.. I should ask for a signing bonus when I go for an interview next time.. Hmm.. I'd like a $40K bonus since I got my MBA from Cornell... plus please add another $20K for my expenses on books, dorm fees, food, and gas..oh and another $5k I spent on air tickets..

As for experience.. Building a Sub Box isn't exactly Rocket-Science..

I'm sorry, you're not a Multi-National Corp or a Pfizer that can pass on these ' R&D' kinda charges to your customer...

Building boxes really isn't as easy as said, and it will take far more than 2 hours to build a complete box for someone who has never done it. Sealed boxes aren't very tough, but ported boxes are a little tougher. Personally, I love ported boxes over sealed and tuning them low.

I think $150 & $250 for sealed boxes is pretty high, although I guess thats what it cost for professional. I'd prefer to make my own anyday. With sealed boxes, if you made your own you can't go wrong other than measuring wrong and having it come out a different volume than you planned. That or you didn't seal it all the way. If you can manage those two things, you couldn't tell a difference in sound between your box and a $150-$250 professional box.

Anyways, who said Dragon wanted to go sealed anyways?
