best 12' sub?

So a guy at my work got a 12' polk momo woofer for 250, he says it good and clear. Also i heard that infinity subs are better, but i'm not sure which. I was on ebay and saw different ones there. Does anybody know which is the best single 12' sub i should get?

Re: best 12' sub?

What amp will you be using to power it? How much do you want to spend? Do you want it loud (SPL), Clean (SQ), or a combo of both? How much trunk space are you willing to give up?

Yeah, just like he said, it's up to you. What kind of music do you listen to? At what volume do you normally have the radio at? Are you wanting to show it, or don't care if it looks "cool" or not (plexiglass, neons, etc).
Box size/design, SPL, efficiency, ... matters to you. Listen to your friends Polk, and see what you think, and go from there.

ok...well i'm new to whole amp, watts, thing. I want a 12in sub that puts out alot, because I don't want to waste trunk space. Does anyone know a good amp that can power a sub that puts out 1000 watss max for a decent price?

Did you see my first post? Try to answer some of the questions and a lot of us will try to help you out. You must be a little more specific. What you are asking is kind of like me asking you: I need to buy a car. It must be blue or something similar, what should I get?

You can read these over just so you get a basic understanding of audio concepts:

Here are a couple of pointers when looking for amps for speakers. Speakers do not put out watts. Amplifiers do. Never worry about max ratings they are mostly lies. Check the rms ratings for the sub, better yet tell us what model the sub is. You never gave us a budget to work with, you said decent price, but I am not sure what decent is...

I hope I do not sound rude, I am really just trying to help...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=1360749842

also i'm willing to spend about 200-250 for an amp.

OK, both are good subs. Have you listened to the Infinity? You said you liked the sound of the Polk right? Have you considered Image Dynamics or JL subs?

OK if you must go with either the Infinity or the Polk try something like this:

If you must buy a new amp:

Rockford 360.2
Rockford 500.2
MTX 6500D
DEI 1100D (I think they are selling new for around $300 on EBay)

There are quite a few choices out there. Look for an amp that will put out somewhere around 350w-500w rms at 4ohms if you get the Polk or Infinity.

Autophile is very correct. When it comes to subs, you really need to know what you want in it or you will be dissapointed with whatever you buy. Also, if I may pass some wisdom, anyone who rates their subs as 'that sh!t pounds' is probably not the best person to get an opinion from. No offense to anyone who has said it, but it really is not quantatitive at all.... as far as SQ subs I will always reccomend the following :

ECLIPSE 88120TiDVC
Image Dynamics IDMAX 12"
JL W7 11.3"

Now, none of those are cheap subs and all of them will sound like **** with a POS amp (read : legacy, pyramid, etc) but there are some of the best SQ subs around.

Oh, let me continue my thought, the infinity perfect 12" are a very cost effective sub, but listening to them and then any of the subs that are on my list will most definetley blow your mind....

Also, if you are curious my bass setup consists of 2 of the eclipses I mentioned and 2 soundstream 1002 amps. This means that each sub gets about ~1kW. Now, this is a purley SQ setup and it sounds brilliant - better then any IDMAX setup.

You forgot my Velodyne DFSC subs on that list I have to disagree here a little. Those IMO are not SQ subs. They are kind of between the SQ and SPL categories. For pure SQ try

Velodyne, Phase Linear Aliante's and stuff like that...

Alright alright, they are more SQL BUT they are also more consumer oriented UNLIKE Velodyne for example. Velodyne makes almost the best sub I have EVER heard but they are not exactly meant for the consumer mid-end market .... more of the ultra-high end.... wouldnt you agree? Hey, you know where I can get a set of those subs? I know they are out of production but I have a friend that wants em bad....

I agree but the W7's retail for almost as much as the Velodyne's used to...

If you are serious about getting a Velodyne contact a friend of mine in Korea. If he can't get them no one can.
