audio/video 101

I own a 1999 acura tl, and was looking to install an LCD and eventually hook it up with a computer / laptop preferrably sitting in the trunk , and use the laptop for playing mp3s etc.

The only problem is I dont know even the basics of how to go about this, was hoping someone could pass on some information about :

a) how to remove panels etc from the dashboard, are there instructions available
b) (i dont have the factory LCD) what kind of LCD do I need to buy, any brand names would help.
c) is there a diagram showing the wiring of the car, need to find out where I can get audio outlets to plug in the laptop and also figure out how to run wires all the way from the trunk to the front of the car.

As you can see my questions are quite basic. some ideas about where to look for this information would be great too.

Thanks
K

blitzsafe

Thanks incubus for the start.

Went digging around and had a couple more qustions, will the Blitzsafe HON/XM DMX CMD V.1D be what I need.

Also it seems to indicate that this adapter would work with only the alpine cd changers etc, wont it act as a generic auxillary input.

In case it does act as a an auxillary audio input, what needs to be done on the console to switch to that auxillary input . Will I have to overide one of the default inputs either tape / cd. If so are there instructions on how to do this ?

Thanks for any answers to my questions.

Yeah, I just got mine installed, you just hit the CD button while you're already in CD mode. Then you're in AUX mode. Goog stuff.
Get the one without a D at the end of the model #. The other will let you have an ADDITIONAL CD changer to an aux input (I believe).

removing front panel

Thanks again incubus.

Was reading, and found that for the 1999TL the blitzsafe modulator needs to be plugged in at the head of the unit, I am assuming for this I will need to remove the front panel for the CD/radio/tape (basically the controls).

While I was looking around I saw that cars like Audi sell something called a "stereo/radio key", which can be used to remove the panel. Does acura have something like that or do I have to use a screw driving / towel to pry it out.

Thanks again.

ight, lets see. there is a DIY instructions at abunchofcars.com for taking apart the dash. you can mount the screen three ways.

i believe it was bxscig who got a touch screen connected to a computer and navi.

computer install

there is another member who took the caseing off a normal 7 inch motorized screen, took out the cd holder above the stock radio and custom mounted the caseless screen in that space very very nice install, i cant find that one tho.

the way i did it was completly take out the stock headunit and put two pioneer units in its place. the top unit is a 7inch screen and the bottom is a indash pioneed dvd player.

as far as LCD companies? theres tons: pioneer, kenwood, sony, eclipse, alpine, clarion, etc. etc. etc. etc.

the audio, im not too sure of. i have an idea but im not sure of it.

as far as running wires. simple-remove all the panelling along either driver or passenger sides. jus grab hold and pull it up. to get the wires from the trunk to the inner cabin: in the trunk lift the spare tire cover and remove it. in the corner there is a slit, stick a hanger into it with the wires taped to em. and pull in into the trunk. simple.

any other questions?!

ps. i should get rep pts for this info (click the scales under my username)
