Audio Newbie -- Replace Speakers or Just Add Amp?

I am thinking of upgrading the audio by either

a) replacing speakers
b) replacing amp

Are the speakers capable of handling more power? Or are they underpowered? I would like to have more clarity at high volumes, and also be able to play more techno/bass loud.

Also money is a factor. Dont havee too much to spend -- looking for the best "bang for your buck" solution.

Well, if I were you, I'd just save up a little longer and do both at once. If you just replace the speakers, they will undoubtedly be underpowered (Unless you get speakers with a very low handling, but then what’s the point?) and will not reproduce sound to their full potential. On the other hand, an amp is only as good as the speakers it is powering. Plus, if you just replace the amp, you risk overpowering the stock speakers. Just my .

People have replaced the speakers and have been quite satisfied with the improvements.

Best bet is to upgrade speakers first, then. See how that sounds. Then I oculd add the amp later.

Next question then is: what are my speaker options? I know others have upgraded them, but I dont know about speakers. I will search the board.

I have only removed the 6x9s and replaced it with two tens powered by an large amp. Sounds damm good.

The 8 Stock speakers are 2 1" inch tweeds, 4 6 1/2 full range, 2 6x9's base.

BTW if you deside to only replace speakers, do the door 6 1/2 inch speakers first. the 6x9 in the rear are a worthless replacement because of the amps low pass filter(unless you add a big amp).
Most people here like polk. I prefer Infiniti.

I am thinking the two front door 6 1/2s would be the best bang for the buck change you can make. Thats what I am planning on doing first And if you want to spend more money do the rear doors as well.

I did Polk all around except the tweeters. The difference in sound quality is amazing. Even the 6x9 'sub' sound better (although I actuallyput int 3-way before I was aware of the internal filter in the amp). I may do amp next but am happy with the current setup.

6 1/2 inch speakers are the cheapest mod you can do. But I still say wait and add an amp with a couple of 10's.

I have seen the polks for less, but it's a start for you, I know they will fit.

I have bought from Crutchfield before, and they have good, reliable service - not the cheapest place though. I bought some Polk db component set speakers brand new (warranty and all) on Ebay for $95 and 6.5 inch db for rear door for $69. That's about half of what Crutchfield and other places sell them for. Look around, there are better deals to be had, but Crutchfield is very helpful with install info/adapters if you are brand new at this stuff. Enjoy---Brian
