Amp is giving me problems after disconnecting the sub box.

This problem might take some other troubleshooting but I'm just gonna throw this out here if anyone might have had this experience before.

I've got this cheap little sound system in my car: MTX Terminator MTX Terminator 400 watt amp+subs

It's decent. I've had it for over 6 months with no problems at all but this morning I had to take out the subwoofer box from my trunk so I could have space to pick up some wheels. After my job was done, I reconnected the box to the appropriate wires and turned on the car but the amp wasnt working. I checked the fuse on it and it was burnt so I replaced it and tried to turn it on again. The amp had the red "protection mode" light on and I tried to pull out the new fuse and it was hot already (less than 30 seconds after power on). I was running late to work so I had to put it off for a while. Then just now I went back and tried to turn on the car so I could mess with it again. I pulled out the fuse and it burned out again and the plastic was all melted.

Anyone know what's possibly wrong? All I did was disconnect the sub box, then the problem occurred. (I actually drove around earlier this morning before I disconnected the box and the sound system was working perfectly.)

When you disconnected the sub box, did you make sure that the + and - terminals of the speaker wire to the box were also unhooked? It sounds like you didn't, and it shorted out your amp. If that's the case, there's no need to keep replacing fuses, just go buy a new amp. Yours is smoked...

No I didn't remove the wires from the amp. Dangit.

Oh well, I wanted a more powerful amp anyways.

What subs do you have, and what voice coils? That'll help us suggest an amp for you to buy... Also, what's your budget?

It's this exact kit:

http://www.woofersetc.com/p6903/TNP2...er-Package.htm

I got it installed for cheap. Just needed something quick to make up for not being able to throw in an aftermarket deck easily.

I think it's a single voice coil running 2ohms.
I don't really wanna spend more than $500. I'm not an audiofreak but I do like the bass, a bit more than last time would be better as I read these 2 12" subs can handle more than the old amp.

Are you wanting to keep the same box/sub combo I'm assuming? If so, this amp should help out: http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...SC+1000.1.html. Those new Discuss amps are built like tanks. I've seen the guys of the 2kw amp, and they'll definitely do rated power.

If you want to up your setup, that might be a little more difficult for $500, but I think it's possible. Where in the country are you located? I have a couple of boxes that could help keeping the cost down, and since I'd assume you already have wire and such, all you'd need would be an amp and sub which are easy enough to come by if you know where to look...

Sounds like you fried the amp, always remove the wires from the amp before working on it, also make sure your ground is still secure

Even if you don't wanna take the wires out, you can always tape it up to avoid touching each other.

Yeap, turns out I messed up the amp. I forgot to pull the fuse to power it off before messing with the wires. Did not tape the wires either. I replaced the amp now but with a weaker one. I'll be looking to upgrade the amp soon with the same box until those go out on me. Maybe try out that Discuss one you showed. Thanks.
