I would go with the Alpine type R. I was planning on buying some for a while it just turns out I bought a home theater system first.

Yes u can blow speakers by underpowering them. The amp has to run at too high of a level...creating more distortion and therefore ruining the speakers.

This also hurts the amp.

What do you mean at too high of a level? Volume on the head unit? The gain on the amp? I thought the higher to gain on the amp the more power that is being drawn from it? Obviosuly if the speakers cant handle the wattage they will blow or become distorted but, underpowering still in my mind cannot ruin a subwoofer. When the subs hits at lower volume less wattage from the amp is produced right?, so are you saying playing subs on a lower volume is technically being underpowered right? Well im doing something wrong and i blow JL speakers every other month, but i dont think underpowering is the problem. I think its JL audio Well you confused me throw me some insight w/detailed explanation. Im real slow......

i have 2 10" type R's... AMAZING!! definatly a must buy!!

Underpowering a sub will do more damage than over powering them, to a certain extent. If the sub is not recieving the amount of of power it needs to produce clean, undistorted sound, it is working harder than it has to. The coil will recieve a distorted signal, making the coil burn out. Overpowering a sub usually does damage because the sub is being forced to move too much, making it bottom out and distort. Its rather complicated, and im having trouble explaining it right now... but yes, underpowering will ruin your subs, especially if you play them loud all the time. I have 300 watts rms going to each 10" sub in my car, the things barely move... but they sound incredible!!

As overrated as JL subs are, I'd still go with them over the Type R's. I've found that if they are not in the absolute perfect environment and PERFECT enclosure, they don't reproduce sound as well as a JL might.
