Exclamation Alpine MRP-M850 amp + 2 audio JL 12w6

well i have an Alpine MRP-M850 amp and 2 12w6 subs and i currently have it wired to 6ohms. it's not enough power for me and the only other way to wire it is at 1.5ohms. is this stable for my amp?

this is the amp i have:

No. More than likely it will run hot or overheat. Get an amp that's 1 ohm stable and wire up the 1.5ohm config or get speakers that are 4ohms, run them in parallel for 2ohms. Or get another 12w6 and see if the 4ohm config is loud enough!

It's a monoblock amp. This means that it was meant to run at lower impedences. It should not overheat or shut down at 1.5 ohms. But still, this is not enough power for two 12W6 subwoofers. You can perform any magic to make that amp produce more power. Get rid of it and buy a bigger amp. A JL Audio 1000/1 will run those subs correctly.

Being a monoblock amp and output impedence are not related. The drop to 1.5ohms will require the amp to dissipate over 50% more heat compared to the 2ohm config. By the time the amp is delivering 600W, its dissipating as much heat @1.5ohms as it would deliverying 800W to a 2ohm load. @6ohms that amp can only deliver about 365W to the load. Just replacing the subs with 4ohm versions and putting them in parallel will get the full 800W out of the amp.

We're talking about a D class amplifier. D class amps alone are not easy to push into thermal protect. Alpine D class amps have a thermal management processor which cuts the signal output when it starts getting warm. This brings the temp back into "COOL". If you can get this amp to shut down you're a special fella.

If it was mine. And I had 4 gauge power wire. I would run that bastard amp at 1.5 ohms and see how it does. If it starts choking..... get a new amp.

Sometimes you won't know for sure until you try it.
